Rehabilitation Efforts Underway, Vaishno Devi Yatra Suspended, President Murmu Voices Anguish Over J&K And Adjoining States

Srinagar: After severe weather events, including relentless rains, cloudbursts, and landslides, the people of Jammu and Kashmir are beginning the arduous task of rebuilding their homes. The recent natural disasters have resulted in over 150 fatalities and extensive property damage. In response to the crisis, the 4th Tawi Bailey Bridge in Jammu has been opened for light motor vehicles, alleviating some traffic congestion caused by the floods.
Officials are optimistic about reopening the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway if weather conditions permit. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted the ongoing rehabilitation efforts, noting that critical challenges remain, particularly the blocked road from Gulabgarh to Chashoti, which is essential for accessing areas affected by the cloudburst. The pilgrimage to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine has been suspended for 11 days following a landslide that resulted in significant casualties. Authorities are prioritizing the safety of pilgrims before making any decisions about resuming the yatra. In Udhampur district, a massive landslide has destroyed over 50 homes, prompting residents to call for immediate government assistance. Many families are living in temporary shelters, facing dire conditions as winter approaches.
Assessment teams have been deployed to evaluate the damage, and a team from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs is inspecting affected areas to facilitate rehabilitation efforts. Local leaders, including the Leader of Opposition in the J&K Assembly, have visited flood-impacted regions to assure residents of timely relief. Reports indicate ongoing flooding in various areas, with some residents in Srinagar still facing rising water levels. However, in South Kashmir, conditions are gradually improving as water recedes, although significant losses have been reported in local orchards. President Droupadi Murmu expressed her sorrow over the devastation caused by the natural disasters, emphasizing national solidarity with those affected. She commended the efforts of rescue and relief workers and reiterated the collective resolve to overcome the challenges posed by these calamities.
