Srinagar : J&K Police, in collaboration with the Food Safety Departments, Municipal Committees, and Revenue, conducted a comprehensive market checking drive across Pulwama, Anantnag, Handwara, and Awantipora to ensure public health and consumer rights amid the ongoing flood situation.
The initiative aimed to verify the sale of fresh and hygienic meat in shops and restaurants, with inspection teams emphasizing cleanliness and the prohibition of rotten meat sales. Shopkeepers were warned of potential legal action for violations. In Anantnag, extensive inspections were carried out to prevent the sale of unfit food materials, with joint teams checking various food outlets and vendors. Handwara saw surprise checks focusing on food quality, expiry dates, pricing, and hygiene standards, leading to the discovery of unsafe food items at one outlet, resulting in a police case being registered. Awantipora’s inspections revealed rotten and unhygienic food items in several establishments, which were destroyed on-site, and fines were imposed. Restaurant owners and shopkeepers received strict instructions to uphold hygiene and food safety standards, with warnings of severe consequences for non-compliance. Police has also appealed people to remain vigilant, report any malpractice, and assist in maintaining a clean and fair marketplace.
