Jammu | Sept, 1 : Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday visited flood hit areas in Jammu to assess the damages caused to local populations and public infrastructure.
Accompanied by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Home Minister visited and inspected the flood hit areas along the Tawi riverbanks and a focus on Manguchak, the district’s worst-hit village. Shah arrived in Jammu the previous night to evaluate the flood situation and ongoing relief efforts, with plans for an aerial survey of the affected regions later in the day. He is scheduled to hold two meetings at Raj Bhawan to discuss flood relief and the impact on border security infrastructure.
The floods, triggered by record rainfall from August 26-27, have resulted in over 130 fatalities and 33 missing persons due to cloudbursts, landslides, and flash floods across Kishtwar, Kathua, Reasi, and Ramban districts since August 14. Among the deceased are 34 pilgrims who lost their lives in a landslide while traveling to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. This marks Shah’s second visit to Jammu in three months, following a previous trip on May 29, shortly after military actions against terror infrastructure. Additionally, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had visited Jammu on August 24 to assess the situation but faced challenges due to adverse weather and landslides. The floods have severely impacted the region, particularly affecting pilgrims and local infrastructure.
