Srinagar: National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Friday celebrated National Sports Day honoring hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary.
The event, organized by the Students Activity and Sports (SAS) Centre, included a pledge ceremony and various sporting activities, with active participation from students, faculty, and staff. A fitness pledge was taken to emphasize the commitment to health, fitness, and sportsmanship. National Sports Day is observed annually to promote the significance of sports and fitness in daily life, commemorating Dhyan Chand, who won three Olympic gold medals and is celebrated for his exceptional skills and sportsmanship. Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman highlighted the vital role of sports in student life, stating that it fosters discipline, confidence, and leadership. Dean Students Welfare Prof. Abid Bazaz stressed the need for students to balance academics with physical activity, asserting that a healthy body is essential for a healthy mind. Dr. Manoj, In-charge Faculty SAS, expressed the Centre’s dedication to enhancing the sports culture on campus, aiming to integrate sports with academics. SAS Officer Kowsar Ali Mir noted the inclusive environment created by the participation of faculty and staff alongside students, which motivates a stronger culture of sportsmanship. NCC Officer Lt. Dr. Nitika Kundan emphasized sports’ role in nation-building, while NSS Coordinator Dr. Pramod Kumar Yadav reiterated that sports are integral to personality development. NIT Srinagar has planned a series of activities until August 31, including sports debates, fitness awareness talks, and competitions in various games. The celebrations will also feature yoga sessions, cycling events, and discussions on Olympic and Paralympic values. This year’s theme, “Ek Ghanta, Khel ke Maidan Main,” encourages dedicating at least 60 minutes daily to physical activity, promoting a culture of health, inclusivity, and sportsmanship on campus.
