Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday slammed West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) for opposing new legislation aimed at removing leaders arrested on serious charges from holding office.
Addressing a public rally at Kolkata Prime Minister emphasized that corrupt wielding power should be in jail rather than in power, referencing TMC minister Chandranath Sinha, who is incarcerated in connection with a school recruitment scam. Modi urged the people of West Bengal to vote for the BJP in the upcoming elections to bring about significant change. During his address, PM Modi supported a proposed bill that would prevent individuals with criminal backgrounds from contesting elections, arguing that those in jail cannot effectively govern. He accused political parties of treating citizens merely as vote banks while neglecting their needs and aspirations. This statement followed the introduction of several bills by the Centre aimed at facilitating the removal of leaders who have been jailed for serious offenses.
PM Modi also inaugurated three new Kolkata Metro routes as part of a broader development initiative in the state. He labeled the TMC as an obstacle to Bengal’s progress, highlighting recent violent crimes against women and criticizing the state’s law and order situation. He claimed that under TMC governance, crime and corruption have become prevalent, asserting that true development will only occur once the TMC is ousted. Furthermore, Modi rejected the Bengal government’s claims of inadequate funding from the Centre, stating that the current administration has allocated significantly more resources for infrastructure projects compared to the previous UPA government. He alleged that much of the funding intended for development is misappropriated by TMC affiliates, hindering progress and the upliftment of the poor in the state.
