India, China to form two groups for border issues after “important talks”: Chinese Envoy

New Delhi: China’s Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, on Friday announced significant discussions between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval regarding border issues during Wang’s recent visit to India.
The Chinese Envoy said that two countries have agreed to establish two groups: one for border delimitation and another for effective management of border areas. This follows the 24th round of the Special Representatives’ dialogue on the boundary question, where ten points of consensus were reached. Xu emphasized that the border issue should not define the overall relationship between India and China, highlighting the importance of cooperation beyond territorial disputes. He noted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to China for the SCO Summit as a pivotal event for bilateral relations, with preparations underway to ensure its success. During the discussions, both sides acknowledged the progress made since the last round of talks and reiterated the need to maintain peace and tranquility in border areas. They agreed on a political perspective for resolving boundary questions and established an Expert Group to explore early boundary delimitation. Additionally, they committed to enhancing border management mechanisms and discussed cooperation on trans-border rivers, including sharing hydrological information during emergencies. The two nations also agreed to reopen three traditional border trading markets and scheduled the next round of Special Representatives’ talks for 2026 in China. Furthermore, they expressed a commitment to multilateralism and maintaining a rules-based international trading system, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the interests of developing countries.
