Srinagar| : The Khelo India Water Sports Festival is set to take place from August 21 to 23, 2025, at Dal Lake in Srinagar, marking a significant milestone as the lake transforms into a national sporting venue.

The inaugural event will feature over 400 athletes from 36 states and union territories competing in medal events such as rowing, canoeing, and kayaking, alongside demonstration events like water skiing and dragon boat racing. The festival aims to blend sporting excellence with the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir, promising an unforgettable experience for both participants and spectators. The initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to establish Jammu & Kashmir as a premier sports hub, complementing the region’s reputation for winter sports in Gulmarg.

Organized by the Sports Authority of India and the J&K Sports Council, the festival aligns with the ‘Khelo Bharat’ policy, which focuses on promoting grassroots sports, enhancing local infrastructure, and generating economic opportunities for the community, including shikara operators and houseboat owners. Prominent figures in the sports community, such as Olympian Bilquis Mir, have expressed optimism about the festival’s potential to inspire young athletes and elevate water sports in India. Local athletes, like state champion Mohsin Ali, are preparing to compete, hoping to achieve personal and national recognition. In addition to sports, the festival emphasizes the preservation of Dal Lake’s natural beauty through cleaning initiatives and ecological awareness. The event’s mascot, the Himalayan Kingfisher, and its logo featuring a shikara symbolize the lake’s identity and cultural significance. Dal Lake, often referred to as the “jewel of Srinagar,” is a vital economic and cultural asset, known for its picturesque landscapes and historical importance. The Khelo India Water Sports Festival represents a broader vision to integrate sports with India’s natural landscapes, enhancing the country’s sporting geography and fostering a sense of heritage and community. As the festival approaches, it is poised to not only host competitive events but also to create a lasting impact on the sporting landscape of Jammu & Kashmir, intertwining culture and competition in a celebration of the region’s identity.
