Srinagar : Sonamarg, located in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, experienced its first snowfall of the season on Monday, coinciding with heavy rainfall across the valley that resulted in a drop in temperatures.
Reports said that upper regions of Sonamarg received light snowfall, marking a significant weather change. The Meteorological Department reported that Qazigund recorded the highest rainfall at 25.0 mm, followed by Kokernag with 19.0 mm. Srinagar, the summer capital, saw 17.2 mm of rain, while Gulmarg, a popular ski resort, recorded 16.4 mm. Other areas such as Pahalgam and Banihal also reported notable precipitation levels. Flash floods were reported in the Ajas area of Bandipora, although officials indicated that there was no flood threat elsewhere in the valley. The water levels in the Jhelum River and various streams have risen, but authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have stated that there is currently no flood risk. Looking ahead, the Meteorological Department forecasts light to moderate rain and thunderstorms across most areas, with heavy rain expected in specific regions of Jammu division, including Reasi and Udhampur. From August 20 to 22, a hot and humid spell with isolated heavy rain is anticipated, followed by light to moderate rain from August 23 to 25. The advisory warns of potential intense rain, thunderstorms, and the risk of cloudbursts and flash floods in vulnerable areas, urging the public to avoid water bodies and unstable structures. Travelers and tourists are advised to plan their activities accordingly.
