Jammu: While intermittent rains affected several areas of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, authorities have confirmed that there is no immediate flood threat in the Valley, as water levels in the Jhelum and its tributaries remain significantly below danger levels.
Continuous monitoring by the Irrigation and Flood Control (IFC) Department indicates that the Jhelum’s gauge readings are well within safe limits, with specific measurements reported for various locations. In contrast, the Suran River in Poonch district experienced a sharp rise, surpassing the danger mark before receding slightly. By evening, the Poonch River was reported to be just below the alert level, and the Mendhar River’s water level had dropped well below the alarm mark. Officials have advised residents near streams and rivers to remain vigilant. Independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif Keng has also dismissed the likelihood of a major flood situation in Jammu and Kashmir, noting that while moderate rainfall is expected, localized intense showers could occur, particularly in Bandipora, Ganderbal, and Srinagar. He clarified that not all intense rainfall events qualify as cloudbursts, which are defined as rainfall exceeding 100 mm in one hour, and recent videos from Warnow Lolab do not indicate such an event. As a precautionary measure, the Directorate of School Education Kashmir has issued an advisory to schools to ensure the safety of students and staff amid the current weather conditions.
