MeT issues yellow, orange alerts, predicts flash floods, landslides at vulnerable places
Srinagar : Weather conditions in the region are set to change, with a three-day wet spell anticipated from July 21 to 23, prompting the Meteorological department to issue yellow and orange alerts. The day temperatures have risen, with Srinagar recording a maximum of 32.7 degrees Celsius, while other areas like Qazigund and Kupwara reported similar highs of 32.5 degrees. Pahalgam recorded a lower maximum of 27.3 degrees, and Gulmarg, known for its ski resort, reached 22.0 degrees. The forecast indicates hot and humid weather for the following day, accompanied by brief spells of light to moderate rain and thundershowers across various locations. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological department, noted that generally cloudy weather with intermittent rain is expected during the wet spell, with the potential for intense showers in some areas. Following this period, from July 24 to 27, brief showers may occur at scattered locations. An advisory has been issued, warning of the possibility of intense showers and gusty winds, which could lead to flash floods, landslides, and rising water levels in rivers and streams. Farmers have been advised to take precautionary measures, including spraying their crops before the onset of the rain.
