“No let up in heat wave as Srinagar sizzles at 34.2°C; MeT predicts hot, humid weather till July 4, expects light to moderate rain from July 5”
Srinagar : Following the unprecedented maximum temperatures, Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, has experienced the hottest June in the past 47 years, while Qazigund has also recorded its warmest month in half a century.
Reports said hat Srinagar has documented the hottest June since 1978, marking it as the second hottest since records began in 1892. An Independent Weather Forecaster, Faizan Arif Keng, while sharing the details, mentioned that Qazigund, known as the gateway to Kashmir, has similarly recorded the warmest June in over 50 years. “Srinagar has just undergone its hottest June since 1978, making it the second hottest on record since observations commenced in 1892,” he stated, adding that the average maximum temperature for June 2025 was 31.0°C, while the mean minimum settled at 18.2°C, leading to an overall average temperature of 24.6°C. The only June that was hotter on record for the city was in 1978, when the overall average temperature reached 25.0°C, propelled by a higher mean maximum of 32.9°C, although the mean minimum that year was lower at 17.1°C, he informed. “Interestingly, 2008 still retains the record for the highest mean minimum temperature in June at 18.3°C, slightly exceeding this year’s figure,” Keng remarked. It is noteworthy that an overall average temperature of 24.6°C — identical to this year — was also recorded in 1971 and 1973, positioning 2025 alongside some of the hottest Junes in history. In June 2025, Qazigund recorded a mean maximum of 30.3°C and a mean minimum of 16.1°C, resulting in an overall average temperature of 23.2°C — the highest since 1973. “In 1973, the station recorded its hottest June on record with an average of 23.7°C, with slightly higher values — 30.4°C mean maximum and 16.9°C mean minimum,” Keng noted, adding that the June average in 1978 was also 23.2°C, the same as this year, although the mean maximum was slightly lower at 30.2°C and the minimum a bit higher at 16.2°C. Qazigund’s highest average minimum for June remains 17.3°C, recorded in 1971, when the overall mean temperature reached 23.3°C.
