Need for intersectoral collaboration between clinicians, researchers, social workers & policy makers: Dir SKIMS
Srinagar : The University of Kashmir’s Department of Social Work organized a one-day workshop focused on women’s reproductive health, specifically addressing Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).
The event aimed to raise awareness about PCOS, which is increasingly prevalent among young women in the region. It featured participation from experts, research scholars, and students, and included two technical sessions with presentations and discussions to enhance understanding of PCOS-related health issues. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan emphasized the need for greater awareness, early diagnosis, and community support for women with PCOS, advocating for the destigmatization of the condition. Dean of Research, Prof. Mohammad Sultan Bhat, highlighted the importance of collaborative research in informing policy and guiding future studies on women’s health. Keynote speaker Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie called for urgent attention to the rising incidence of PCOS and the necessity for collaboration among clinicians, researchers, and policymakers. Dr. Abdul Majid Ganai stressed the importance of awareness and lifestyle interventions for effective management of PCOS, while Dr. Arshad Hussain discussed the psychological impacts associated with the condition. Prof. Shazia Manzoor, Head of the Department of Social Work, advocated for a bio-psycho-social approach to understanding PCOS. The workshop was convened by Dr. Aadil Bashir, who provided an overview of the related research project, with Dr. Sarfaraz Ahmad assisting in the proceedings.
