Kulgam : A mega distt-level event held at conference hall mini-secretariat besides seminars, awareness progs, rallies, plantation drives and other events marked the commemoration of International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking across Kulgam distt.
The prog was presided over by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kulgam, Athar Aamir Khan.
Speaking on the occasion, DC stated that the distt is adopting a multi-pronged strategy to combat the growing menace of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
He emphasized the need for a collective fight involving all stakeholders, highlighting that a comprehensive and united approach is vital to effectively address this societal challenge.
DC said that there is commitment to zero tolerance against drugs, adding that strict action is being taken against those involved in drug trafficking, while adequate rehabilitation support is being extended to victims through institutional mechanis
One of the key highlights shared by the DC was the distt’s significant progress in eliminating illicit crop cultivation.
In 2023, poppy was cultivated over 750 kanals, which was entirely destroyed. In 2024, the figure drastically dropped to just 40 kanals, and as of now, Kulgam has achieved zero poppy cultivation. Similarly, bung cultivation has also been reduced to zero in the distt.
This remarkable achievement was made possible through vigorous enforcement efforts and the promotion of alternative crops among farmers, he added.
DC also added that the distt has been conducting intensive awareness campaigns under Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir initiative. These efforts include widespread public outreach involving youth, students, religious leaders and the community at large through cultural, educational, and IEC-based progs.
On the occasion, DC flagged off an IEC Van to further strengthen awareness efforts, and launched a signature campaign to mobilize community support for a drug-free society.
He also appreciated the efforts of the distt Drug De-Addiction Centre (DDAC) for their role in the rehabilitation of patients, terming it crucial in supporting individuals on the path to recovery and reintegration.
Importantly, DC informed that 100 percent of pharmacies in the distt are now under CCTV surveillance and operate with a computerized billing system, ensuring greater transparency, accountability, and control over the sale of drugs.
Resource persons also briefed the participants, sharing insights into preventive and rehabilitative measures.
ADC Viqar Ahmed Giri, ACR, Riyaz Ahmad Shah and other officers were present during the prog
The prog also witnessed enthusiastic participation of frontline workers, officials from various deptts, students, civil society members, and other stakeholders, all pledging their commitment to making Kulgam a drug-free and Khushaal Kulgam.
Similarly functions were held at Sub Distt- Tehsil level.
