Nicosia(Cyprus)|June, 16 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a strategic roadmap for enhanced cooperation between India and Cyprus during his recent visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in over two decades. He expressed gratitude for Cyprus’s support of India’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council and its assistance in combating cross-border terrorism. Modi highlighted the alignment between Cyprus’s Vision 2035 and India’s Viksit Bharat 2047, indicating a collaborative approach towards mutual growth over the next five years.
To bolster defense and security ties, a focus will be placed on the defense industry through a bilateral Defense Cooperation Programme, alongside the initiation of dialogues on cyber and maritime security. Modi emphasized the importance of developing a real-time information exchange mechanism to combat terrorism, drug, and arms trafficking. During his visit, Modi was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, Cyprus’s highest civilian honor, which he dedicated to the friendship between the two nations and the aspirations of the Indian people. He described the award as a symbol of the commitment to peace, security, and prosperity shared by both countries. Modi also discussed economic relations, noting the excitement within the business community regarding the ongoing negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union, expected to conclude by the end of the year. He highlighted the launch of the India-Cyprus-Greece Business and Investment Council as a step towards strengthening business ties. Additionally, Modi recognized Cyprus as a favored destination for Indian tourists and emphasized the need for direct air connectivity. He expressed enthusiasm for the growing popularity of yoga and Ayurveda in Cyprus, reflecting cultural exchanges between the two nations. The visit concluded with Modi receiving a warm welcome from the Indian diaspora, further solidifying the bonds between India and Cyprus.
