Srinagar : The School Education Department (SED) Thursday marked the World Environment Day celebration with a series of impactful events held across the Union Territory, emphasizing the environmental awareness and action among the students and educators.
On the occasion, an impactful rally on “World Environment Day” with the pertinent theme “Beat Plastic Pollution” was organized in which over 200 students from various schools participates.
Additional Chief Secretary, Higher Education Department, Shantamanu, flagged off the rally.
Being organized in collaboration with the Institute of Engineers (India), J&K Centre, traversed the scenic Boulevard Road from Nehru Park to Zabarwan Park Corridor, drawing public attention to the urgent need to reduce the plastic waste.
Earlier, the celebration was officially kick started by Secretary, SED, Ram Niwas Sharma, who engaged in an online interaction with the Eco club members from 200 government and private schools.
During this insightful session, the Secretary underscored the critical role of youth in environmental conservation. He was joined by Dr. G.N. Itoo, Director School Education Kashmir (DSEK) and Syed Shabir Ahmad, Joint Director, Central.
In a parallel event, DSEK, in collaboration with Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Amirakadal, Srinagar, hosted a vibrant World Environment Day celebration.
Dr. G N Itoo, graced the occasion as chief guest, accompanied by Syed Shabir Ahmad, Joint Director, Central and Rifat Qadri, CEO, Srinagar.
The students showcased innovative models on environmental themes, demonstrating their creativity and understanding of ecological challenges. A spirited painting competition among the students from cluster schools was also a highlight of the event.
Further extending the reach of the celebrations, the Government Boys Higher Secondary School (BHSS), Ganderbal, organized an event featuring compelling speeches by the teachers and students, a captivating Heritage Exhibition and thought-provoking skits.
Dr. Itoo, chaired the event being attended by Oneel Kumar, CEO, Ganderbal, Rumaysa Sangeen, Deputy CEO, Ganderbal, DYSSO and other distinguished dignitaries.
Beyond these flagship events, World Environment Day 2025 was celebrated across the entire Kashmir Division in all schools through a diverse array of activities.
These included solemn pledges, engaging quizzes, extensive tree plantation drives, crucial cleanliness campaigns, informative awareness rallies, insightful seminars and talks, stimulating debates, invigorating nature walks and marathons and creative painting and slogan writing competitions, In total, 7955 schools celebrated the day with total participation of 439072 students, teachers and HoIs and community members.
