Srinagar: Police on Thursday said that it has arrested two individuals who were posing as being closely connected to authorities and extorting money from the public here in Awantipora.
In a statement issued from Zonal Police Headquarters Srinagar Police said the arrests came after a complaint was lodged by one Mushtaq Ahmad Dar S/o Gh Rasool Dar R/o Naristan. Police its statement said that according to the complaint the accused were fraudulently presenting themselves as close associates of police and demanding money under false promises. Police in its statement identified the accused as Jaliya Parveen, D/o Mohd Amin Rather R/o Monghal, Anantnag, and Bilal Ahmad Rah S/o Gh Ahmad Rah R/o Chanapora, Srinagar who Police said were allegedly targeted suspects and were called for questioning, exploiting fear of legal action to extract payments.
Police in its statement further said that illegal activities of the accused surfaced after multiple victims came forward, reporting coercion and threats, adding therein that while acting promptly on the complaint, Police Station Tral registered FIR No. 62/2025 under relevant sections of the law besides taking into custody the said accused. In the concluding para of its above quoted statement police appealed people to remain vigilant and not to fall victim to such fraudulent people. Reaffirming its commitment to act firmly against anti-social elements and ensure public safety and trust Police appealed people to share suspicious activities with the law enforcing authorities.
