Srinagar: In a harrowing incident during the early hours of Monday, a speeding truck ran over a herd of sheep and goats in the Bagerni Khellani area of Doda district, killing a member of a nomadic family and leaving over 80 livestock dead. The incident occurred while the family was in the midst of their seasonal migration, moving their animals through the region.
According to officials, the truck fatally struck Muzaffar Ali, a member of the nomadic group, who died on the spot. The victim was reportedly walking with the herd when the vehicle veered into their path, crushing a large number of animals and triggering panic among the family members.
Preliminary estimates reveal that out of approximately 400 sheep and goats, 81 were killed instantly while at least 16 others were injured. The livestock belonged to Abdul Wahib, son of Mohammad Qasima, whose family now faces significant economic distress due to the tragedy.
“This is not just a case of loss of livestock, but a heartbreaking blow to a family that depends entirely on these animals for survival,” said a local.
Police have taken cognizance of the matter and initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the accident.
