Rajouri : In a vibrant display of environmental consciousness and commitment to personal well-being, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) on Tuesday organized ‘Greenathon’—a symbolic green walk aimed at promoting fitness and raising awareness about environmental conservation. The event was organized by the University’s Yoga and Meditation Cell and commenced from the scenic Pir Panjal Biodiversity Park.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from across the University community, including students, faculty members, research scholars, and administrative staff, with nearly 200 individuals joining the walk.
Prof. Jawaid Iqbal, Vice Chancellor of BGSBU, lauded the Yoga and Meditation Cell for its efforts in combining health awareness with ecological responsibility. He highlighted the significance of fostering a culture of fitness while simultaneously working towards environmental protection. “BGSBU’s commitment towards preserving its natural surroundings is commendable. Initiatives like the Greenathon are vital in encouraging sustainable and healthy lifestyles,” he stated. Prof. Iqbal also urged all stakeholders to explore sustainable alternatives to protect the environment and enhance personal wellness.
The event was formally flagged off by Prof. M. J. Warsi, Dean Academic Affairs, who emphasized the collective responsibility in safeguarding the environment. “The Greenathon exemplifies BGSBU’s dedication to personal wellness and environmental sustainability,” he remarked.
Dr. A. A. Shah, Associate Dean, School of Biosciences and Biotechnology, spoke about the University’s adherence to the philosophy of Integrated Sustainability, which harmonizes social responsibility with ecological stewardship.
Dr. Shreekar Pant, Convener of the Yoga and Meditation Cell, underscored the health benefits of green activities such as walking in natural spaces. “Green exercises like these not only boost cardiovascular health and lower blood pressure, but they also support mental well-being by reducing stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression,” he explained.
