Rome: Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church, has died aged 88 after serving as the head of the Vatican for 12 years.
The Vatican announced his passing on Easter Monday, on its X (formerly Twitter) handle: “Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.”
Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, said in a statement: “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father.”
The pontiff had been afflicted by a series of health issues in recent years and was using a wheelchair for some of his recent public appearances. In February 2025, he was hospitalised with severe bronchitis and pneumonia in both lungs.
The pope, who had part of a lung removed as a young man, had become increasingly frail over the years. He underwent two major intestinal surgeries in recent years: in 2021, to remove the left part of his colon; and again to treat an intestinal blockage in June 2023.
His death has now set in motion the centuries-old process of electing a new Pope to spearhead the Catholic Church.
The first Latin American to hold the position, Pope Francis was elected in 2013 after the retirement of his predecessor, Benedict XVI retired.
His death came a day after he wished “Happy Easter” to worshippers at the Vatican’s St Peter’s Square.
His passing was mourned by several world leaders, who expressed their condolences at his death and paid heartfelt tributes.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on his X: “Deeply pained by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. In this hour of grief and remembrance, my heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community. Pope Francis will always be remembered as a beacon of compassion, humility and spiritual courage by millions across the world.
“From a young age, he devoted himself towards realising the ideals of Lord Christ. He diligently served the poor and downtrodden. For those who were suffering, he ignited a spirit of hope.”
Recalling his meeting with him in Italy, PM Modi added: “I fondly recall my meetings with him and was greatly inspired by his commitment to inclusive and all-round development. His affection for the people of India will always be cherished. May his soul find eternal peace in God’s embrace.”
French President Emanuel Macron expressed his grief and wrote: “From Buenos Aires to Rome, Pope Francis wanted the Church to bring joy and hope to the poorest. May it unite people with each other and with nature. May this hope continually resurrect beyond him.”
He added: “My wife and I extend our thoughts to all Catholics, to the grieving world.”
US Vice President JD Vance, who met the pope just yesterday, said his heart “goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him”.
“I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill. But I’ll always remember him for the below homily he gave in the very early days of COVID. It was really quite beautiful. May God rest his soul.”
European Union President Ursula von der Leyne wrote: “Today, the world mourns the passing of Pope Francis. He inspired millions, far beyond the Catholic Church, with his humility and love so pure for the less fortunate. My thoughts are with all who feel this profound loss. May they find solace in the idea that Pope Francis’ legacy will continue to guide us all toward a more just, peaceful and compassionate world.”
Cardinal Kevin Ferrell, the Vatican camerlengo who had confirmed the news earlier this morning said in his statement: “His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with faithfulness, courage, and universal love, especially for the poorest and most marginalised.
“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite, merciful love of God, One and Tribune.″

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a national televised address that all flags would fly at half-mast on government buildings Tuesday as a sign of respect for the late pontiff. “For Australian Catholics, he was a devoted champion and loving father,” Albanese said. “Pope Francis lived out his faith and vocation in word and deed. He was truly inspirational.”
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said Francis was “a man of humility, his legacy includes an unwavering commitment to the vulnerable, to social justice and to interfaith dialogue.”
