G’baL : In a landmark development poised to transform the horticultural landscape of Kashmir, a state-of-the-art Model Orchard was inaugurated today under the banner of Kashmir Agriventures. The initiative is spearheaded by Hamayun Shabir, a young and dynamic horticulturist from Ganderbal, known for his academic brilliance and international exposure.
Hamayun, a graduate in Horticulture from SKUAST-Kashmir, is currently pursuing an International Master’s in Horticultural Sciences from one of Italy’s premier agricultural universities. As part of his ongoing academic journey, he is set to proceed to the University of California, Davis, to complete his Master’s thesis focused on biostimulants—a sustainable and cutting-edge approach to improving plant health and crop productivity. His global experience includes a transformative one-year internship with Italy’s Mazzoni Group, one of Europe’s leading agricultural firms. There, Hamayun gained firsthand insights into innovative orchard management and nursery technologies—knowledge that played a crucial role in conceptualizing Kashmir Agriventures.
At the heart of today’s launch was the introduction of the BIBAUM® Plantation System, a patented dual-leader tree training method developed by Mazzoni. This marks the first-ever implementation of BIBAUM® in Kashmir, enabling the cultivation of narrow fruit tree orchards, particularly for apples, pears, and cherries. The system allows for easier management, increased productivity, and semi-mechanization of orchard tasks like pruning and thinning. The Model Orchard also features advanced apple varieties from the CIV (Consorzio Italiano Vivaisti) breeding program, some of which are naturally resistant to scab—a disease that has long plagued apple growers in the Valley. In addition, two new cherry varieties are being trialed under the BIBAUM® system, offering hope for a revival of cherry cultivation in Ganderbal. Kashmir Agriventures symbolizes a unique convergence of local commitment and international expertise, potentially ushering in a new era of modern horticulture in the region. The initiative not only reflects Hamayun Shabir’s dedication to his roots but also serves as a beacon of innovation and sustainability for Kashmir’s farming future.
