“For students from economically weaker sections, the soaring tuition fees act as an insurmountable barrier. Education, a fundamental right, is being transformed into a privilege enjoyed by the affluent. This disturbing trend threatens to deepen the socio-economic divide in the region. Education is the cornerstone of societal progress, a ladder that enables individuals to climb out of poverty and contribute meaningfully to the nation. In Jammu and Kashmir, however, the dream of quality education is increasingly slipping out of the hands of the poor due to the exorbitant fees of private universities. As private education becomes increasingly unaffordable, the onus lies on the Government to fortify public universities in both Kashmir and Jammu regions to ensure equitable access to education. The rise of private universities has undeniably expanded the higher education landscape, offering modern infrastructure and diverse courses but these benefits come with a hefty price tag, making them inaccessible to many. For students from economically weaker sections, the soaring tuition fees act as an insurmountable barrier. Education, a fundamental right, is being transformed into a privilege enjoyed by the affluent. This disturbing trend threatens to deepen the socio-economic divide in the region. Public universities have historically been the bastions of affordable education. However, many of these institutions in Jammu and Kashmir suffer from inadequate funding, outdated infrastructure, and a shortage of qualified faculty. These issues compromise the quality of education and push students towards costlier private alternatives. To counter this, the Government must prioritize the upliftment of public universities, ensuring they are equipped with modern facilities and well-trained educators. Investment in public universities is not merely a financial decision; it is a social imperative. By allocating adequate funds, the Government can upgrade laboratories, libraries, and classrooms, creating an environment conducive to learning. Scholarships and financial aid programs should be expanded to support students from marginalized communities. Additionally, introducing job-oriented courses can enhance employability, encouraging students to opt for public institutions over private ones.
“Ensuring that funds allocated for public universities are utilized effectively requires robust monitoring mechanisms. Involving stakeholders, including students and faculty, in decision-making processes can improve institutional governance and build trust. The Government must recognize that the future of Jammu and Kashmir’s youth cannot be left at the mercy of market forces. Education is the basic right of the people and as such its accessibility should not be determined by an individual’s financial status. Boosting public universities is a long-term investment in the socio-economic stability of the region. As the cost of private education continues to soar, the Government must act decisively to rejuvenate public universities. By doing so, it can uphold the constitutional promise of equal opportunity, ensuring that every child in Jammu and Kashmir has the chance to dream, aspire, and achieve. The time to act is now.”
Collaboration with industries and research organizations can further enhance the reputation and functionality of public universities. Internship opportunities and skill development programs can bridge the gap between academia and industry, making graduates more market-ready. Such initiatives will not only improve the standing of public universities but also help retain talent within the region. Transparency and accountability are equally essential. Ensuring that funds allocated for public universities are utilized effectively requires robust monitoring mechanisms. Involving stakeholders, including students and faculty, in decision-making processes can improve institutional governance and build trust.
