Budgam : In a groundbreaking move to empower women and promote gender equality, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced recently that all government-owned buses, including eBuses, will offer free travel for women starting from April 1, 2025.
The announcement, made on the occasion of International Women’s Day, has been met with widespread acclaim and appreciation, particularly from women students, professionals, and local residents. The initiative, which aims to alleviate the financial burden on women, is designed to improve access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities, particularly for those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. By making public transport more accessible, the government seeks to encourage greater participation of women in the workforce and other spheres of life. “This initiative is a testament to our commitment to women’s empowerment,” said Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in his address. “On this Women’s Day, we reaffirm our dedication to ensuring that women in Jammu and Kashmir have the freedom to move, study, and work without the constraints of financial barriers.” Local women and students have voiced strong support for the initiative, seeing it as a significant step toward independence and self-sufficiency. Anjum, a student from Srinagar, expressed her excitement: This is a huge relief for us. Many of us have to travel long distances for college, and the cost of transportation adds up. Free bus travel will allow me to focus more on my studies rather than worrying about how to manage travel expenses, she said. Sana, a young professional from Jammu, shared her enthusiasm: “As a working woman, this initiative will make a real difference in my daily life. “ It’s not just about saving money, but also about making public spaces more accessible and safer for women. The freedom to move around without financial stress is a game changer,” She added. Mariam, a mother of two from Anantnag, who frequently travels to access healthcare facilities, said, “This decision by the Chief Minister will greatly ease our lives. The cost of travel, especially when you need medical attention, can be overwhelming. With free transport, I will no longer have to choose between essentials and transportation.”
The initiative has also received support from local leaders and social organizations, who believe that this move will significantly boost the social and economic participation of women. Farida Begum, a member of a local women’s rights group, said, “This is a monumental step. We have been advocating for women’s mobility and independence, and today’s announcement shows that the government is listening. This will make a positive impact on women’s lives, especially those from rural areas who have limited access to public transport, she added. The announcement also aligns with the government’s broader goals of improving infrastructure and making the region more inclusive for all its residents. The Chief Minister noted that this initiative is only the beginning of further reforms to ensure the full participation of women in every aspect of society. “As a government, our focus remains on providing equal opportunities for all, and empowering women is central to this vision,” CM Omar Abdullah concluded, reflecting on the significance of International Women’s Day and the future of women in Jammu and Kashmir. The free travel initiative, set to roll out in just under a month, is expected to transform daily commutes for thousands of women, making it easier for them to take on new opportunities, pursue higher education, and contribute more actively to the region’s economy and social fabric.
