Srinagar: The much-anticipated Khelo India Winter Games 2025, initially delayed due to insufficient snowfall, are now set to be held in the picturesque town of Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, from March 9 to 12. The delay, which had raised concerns about the feasibility of the event, was alleviated thanks to a recent heavy snowfall across the Kashmir Valley. This fresh layer of snow has not only improved the snow conditions for winter sports but has also reignited excitement for the event.
A Fresh Coat Of Snow Rejuvenates Hopes: The recent snowfall has created an ideal environment for winter sports enthusiasts, and organizers are optimistic that the games will unfold smoothly. With Gulmarg’s renowned ski slopes now covered in a blanket of snow, winter sports competitions such as Alpine Skiing, Ski Mountaineering, Snowboarding, and Nordic Skiing are set to take center stage. The event will be held across two key venues: Kongdoori and the Gulmarg Club, which are known for their excellent facilities and breathtaking scenic views. The opening ceremony, which will include a variety of entertainment and sports activities, is slated for March 9. It will feature a night skiing demonstration, fireworks, a laser show, and a series of cultural programs. This lively beginning is expected to capture the essence of the games while promoting the unique cultural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir.
A Showcase Of Winter Sports: One of the major highlights of the 2025 edition of the Khelo India Winter Games is the extensive line-up of winter sports. The event will showcase some of the most exciting and physically demanding competitions, such as Alpine Skiing, Ski Mountaineering, Snowboarding, and Nordic Skiing. Athletes will compete for top honors, while also demonstrating their exceptional skills on the snow-covered slopes of Gulmarg. The winter games, however, are not solely focused on sports but also aim to promote Gulmarg as a premier winter sports destination in India. This would align with the Jammu and Kashmir government’s larger vision of making the region a global hub for winter sports tourism. By putting the spotlight on the state’s natural beauty and ideal conditions for winter sports, the event aims to drive further interest in both national and international tourism.
Economic Boost, Tourism Growth: Apart from the sporting element, the Khelo India Winter Games will provide a significant boost to the local economy, with Gulmarg set to benefit across multiple sectors. Hotels, local transport services, and pony operators, all of whom rely on seasonal tourism, are expected to see a rise in demand as athletes, officials, and spectators descend on the region. The Jammu and Kashmir government is also looking at ways to maximize the tourism potential of Gulmarg beyond the winter months. Known for its stunning meadows in the summer, Gulmarg is a popular year-round destination. The government’s long-term vision includes enhancing infrastructure and introducing new activities, including heli-skiing, which could further elevate the town’s appeal as a premier destination for adventure sports. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has shared plans to expand the existing infrastructure, stating that talks are ongoing with private investors to introduce heli-skiing in the region. “We are in talks with some private investors who are ready to create more skiing infrastructure in Gulmarg,” Abdullah revealed on February 23. “If there is a good proposal that would create new infrastructure, we will work on it.” These plans indicate that Gulmarg’s winter sports offerings will continue to evolve, drawing visitors from around the world. Recently Farooq Shah, MLA Gulmarg, expressed his optimism for the upcoming tourism season in the region, stating, “With the recent snowfall, we are confident that the winter games will take place successfully. “We are hopeful that this event will not only showcase Gulmarg’s potential as a winter sports destination but also significantly boost local tourism. The recent review by Omar Abdullah has ensured that all arrangements are in place, and we look forward to a successful season ahead,” he added.
Ensuring a Safe And Secure Event: Given the scale and prestige of the Khelo India Winter Games, security arrangements have been a top priority for the organizers. To ensure the safety of participants, officials, and spectators, a high-level security review meeting was convened by Maqsood-ul Zaman, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Northern Kashmir Range Baramulla. The meeting, held at PC Kunzer, included representatives from various security agencies, including the Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, and army units, all of whom will play a crucial role in maintaining law and order during the event. A comprehensive multi-layered security plan has been put in place, covering key venues, accommodation facilities, and transit routes. Special deployments have been made to provide additional security at the event sites and along major routes that will be used by participants and tourists. These measures include access control points, anti-sabotage checks, and CCTV surveillance across all venues to maintain a vigilant watch. In addition to these measures, regular patrolling will be conducted by security personnel to ensure the area remains secure. The police have urged all attendees to cooperate with the security personnel and follow the necessary protocols to ensure a smooth and incident-free event. “Security is a top priority, and we are working closely with all relevant agencies to ensure the event is a success,” said Maqsood-ul Zaman. “We urge everyone to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately.”
Local Impact, Stakeholder Involvement: The Khelo India Winter Games 2025 are set to have a profound impact on the local community. Hotels, restaurants, transporters, and other service providers in the region are preparing for a surge in visitors during the event. Local businesses, including those in the tourism and hospitality sector, are expected to benefit significantly from the influx of guests, which will provide a welcome boost after a long period of uncertainty. The local government is also working closely with stakeholders to ensure that the infrastructure upgrades and security measures are implemented seamlessly. As part of this, various departments, including the Tourism Department, the Sports Council, and the Revenue Department, are collaborating to ensure the event’s success. While the primary focus of the Khelo India Winter Games is to foster the growth of winter sports and tourism, the event also aims to highlight the potential of the region as a year-round tourist destination. By showcasing Gulmarg’s natural beauty and world-class sporting infrastructure, the government hopes to create a lasting impression that will encourage visitors to return even after the games have concluded. As the Khelo India Winter Games 2025 draw near, there is a palpable sense of anticipation surrounding the event. The games will not only showcase India’s burgeoning winter sports talent but also set the stage for the continued development of Gulmarg as a global winter sports hub. With plans for heli-skiing and further infrastructure development in the works, Gulmarg is poised to become a major player on the international winter sports circuit. The government’s efforts to upgrade the region’s facilities and infrastructure are in line with its long-term vision to make Jammu and Kashmir a sought-after destination for adventure sports. The Khelo India Winter Games 2025, therefore, hold significance beyond just the competition. They represent a turning point for winter sports in India, with the potential to shape the future of winter tourism and sports in the region. With strong government support, increasing investment, and an enthusiastic local community, Gulmarg is on track to become a leading destination for winter sports enthusiasts in the years to come. With snow finally covering the slopes and preparations in full swing, the Khelo India Winter Games 2025 are set to make a grand return to Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir. As athletes prepare to compete, the event promises not only to showcase the region’s winter sports potential but also to boost local tourism and contribute to the economy. Through careful planning, strong security measures, and a focus on infrastructure development, the Khelo India Winter Games will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy in the region for years to come.
