Fear grips in Srinagar parts as stray dog attacks rise, locals slam SMC’s inaction

Srinagar : Residents from various colonies in Srinagar have expressed frustration over the growing menace of stray dogs, which has left several people injured in recent attacks. Fear and panic have gripped the affected areas as locals demand immediate intervention from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to control the rising stray dog population.
The increasing number of dog attacks in Humhama, Chanapora and other areas have created a sense of insecurity among the people, especially children and the elderly, who are most vulnerable.
Speaking about the situation, Aijaz Ahmad, a resident of Humhama Srinagar said, Stray dogs are creating a fear psychosis in our locality. This continuous threat has made residents feel unsafe, and we urgently demand that the Srinagar Municipal Corporation take immediate action to control the stray dog population, he said.
Residents allege that despite repeated complaints, authorities have failed to take effective steps to address the issue. They argue that the unchecked rise in the stray dog population poses a serious public safety risk. Many people are now afraid to venture out alone, especially during early mornings and late evenings, due to the looming threat of dog attacks.
“We cannot let our children play outside, nor can we walk freely in our own neighborhood. The situation is worsening, and if authorities do not act now, it could lead to more serious consequences,” said Mir Zafar, another resident.
The citizens are urging SMC to implement immediate measures, such as sterilization drives, relocation of aggressive dogs, and proper waste management to curb the increasing number of strays.
Residents have urged SMC Commissioner Dr. Owaiz Ahmed to take decisive action in addressing the stray dog issue in these areas.
They have called for measures such as sterilization drives and the establishment of shelters to manage the population effectively. Additionally, many have emphasized the need for awareness campaigns on animal control programs to promote a humane and sustainable solution.
