Srinagar:Below mentioned is the weeklong timeline of the key public events and engagements of top public dignitaries witnessed within and outside Jammu & Kashmir this week:-
1. CM Omar Inaugurates Akhal-Kangan Bridge:
Kangan: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today inaugurated the long-awaited Akhal-Kangan bridge, connecting dozens of villages with the sub-division. The bridge, spanning the Sindh River, had been a long-standing demand of the residents. MLA Kangan Mian Mehar Ali and senior officials were present at the inauguration.
2. IGP Kashmir, CRPF Officials Hold Security Review Meeting:
Srinagar: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir V.K. Birdi and IG CRPF Mitesh Kumar chaired a joint security review meeting at the Police Control Room (PCR) Kashmir on Friday. The meeting focused on strengthening coordination between J&K Police and CRPF through intelligence sharing and counter-militancy strategies.
3. J&K Govt To Upgrade Highways With Tourist Amenities:
Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government is set to enhance highways with improved tourist facilities. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has been directed to submit a detailed plan for wayside amenities along major routes, while the NHAI will operationalize non-functional facilities by June 2026.
4. CM Omar Warns Of Looming Water Crisis In J&K:
Srinagar: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah raised concerns over an impending water crisis in J&K, urging collective efforts for conservation. He emphasized the need for responsible water usage and pledged to review measures taken by the Jal Shakti Department to address the issue.
5. Army Chief Says “Art 370 Abrogation Reduced Militancy In J&K”:
New Delhi: Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi stated that the abrogation of Article 370 has significantly reduced militancy in Jammu and Kashmir. He highlighted the improved security situation and the clarity it has brought to the region’s identity.
6. Kashmir’s Glaciers Shrinking Due To Climate Change: Srinagar: Experts warn that Kashmir’s glaciers have lost nearly 20% of their mass in the last five decades due to rising temperatures and reduced snowfall. The ongoing drought and declining precipitation are threatening the region’s water security and agriculture.
7. VP Dhankhar Lauds J&K’s Progress Post-Article 370 Abrogation:
Katra: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, speaking at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) convocation, hailed the transformation of J&K since the abrogation of Article 370. He urged citizens to prioritize national interest over political agendas.
8. LG Sinha Encourages Youth To Drive National Growth:
Katra: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, addressing SMVDU graduates, emphasized the role of youth in shaping India’s future. He urged them to stay rooted in cultural traditions while embracing innovation and technological advancements.
9. Srinagar Airport’s New Terminal Nears Final Approval:
Srinagar: After years of technical delays, the Rs 1,800 crore expansion of Srinagar International Airport is set for final approval before construction begins. The new 71,500 sq. meter terminal will boost passenger capacity to 10 million annually, up from the current 2.5 million. Airport Director Javaid Anjum confirmed that most approvals are in place, with final clearance expected soon. The upgraded terminal will accommodate 2,900 peak-hour passengers, significantly enhancing the airport’s infrastructure.
