Prof Khan, a chief scientist, was working as Associate Director Research and OSD to Vice Chancellor at the university. He has been appointed on a tenure of three years, which is further extendable by two years.
“As recommended by the Selection Committee, approved by the Board of Management at its 71st Meeting and in continuation to Notice issued under endorsement No.Au/Adm(GAD)/Rec-Officers/2025/3991-98 dated 31.01.2025, Dr Azmat Alam Khan is hereby appointed as Registrar,” reads the SKUAST-K Order No. 98 (Est.) of 2025 dated 19.02.2025.

He was the Co-PI of the World Bank-funded National Agricultural Higher Education Project (NAHEP) for the institutional development of the SKUAST-K. As the founding head and team leader of the Centre for Research on Poultry at SKUAST-K, Dr Khan has been instrumental in transforming poultry development and research in Kashmir. He established critical infrastructure including breeder farm and hatchery, laying the foundation for advanced poultry research and teaching in the University.
Dr Khan, a BVSc&AH from SKUAST-K, has earned his Masters and Doctorate from Indian Veterinary Research Institute Izatnagar.
He has handled many prestigious externally funded projects, including All India Coordinated Research Project on Poultry Breeding, guided 12 Masters and PhD students and has more than 500 publications to his credit, which include more than 200 peer-reviewed research publications in national and international journals of repute.
Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-K, Prof Nazir Ahmad Ganie, while congratulating Prof Khan for his appointment as the Registrar of the university, expressed his confidence that he will deliver to his best and will take along all stakeholders for strengthening the academics and research at the university.
While assuming the charge, Prof Khan said his priority will be to take all teaching and non-teaching staff along to take the university to greater heights while ensuring transparency and speedy delivery.
