Srinagar/Feb,15; Ahmad Ayaz, a social activist, has underscored the need to ban liquor in Jammu and Kashmir.
In a statement issued here on Saturday Ayaz said that demand for a liquor ban in J&K is neither new nor unique to the region. Several states, including Gujarat, have already enforced liquor bans for social, cultural, and religious reasons. He said however, in J&K, this demand carries even greater significance due to its Muslim-majority composition,reminding therein further that alcohol is strictly prohibited in Islam.
Beyond religious concerns, the issue is deeply intertwined with J&K’s socio-economic challenges. With limited employment opportunities, a large section of the region’s youth is falling prey to substance abuse. The growing drug menace further reinforces the need for stricter measures, as easy access to alcohol only worsens addiction issues.
Recently, a National Conference (NC) member moved a bill seeking a liquor ban, with support from leaders across party lines, including Dr. Nirmal Singh of the BJP. Ayaz said that doubts persist about whether this bill will be pursued with genuine intent,adding therein that half-hearted approach of the National Conference, particularly in its latest statement, raises serious concerns. He reminded that even during Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah’s tenure, decisive actions on such critical social issues were often diluted due to political considerations.
Stating that people of J&K deserve more than symbolic gesture Ayaz further said thatliquor ban is not just about religious sentiment but is also a necessary step towards protecting the youth and combating the growing substance abuse crisis. He further said however, without strong political will and sincere commitment from all stakeholders, the bill risks meeting the same fate as many other well-intended but unimplemented policies—languishing in uncertainty and neglect.
Stating that as this issue is the need of the hour, leaders across party lines must prioritize the welfare of the people over political calculations,Ayaz said that a serious, time-bound approach to banning liquor is essential to safeguard the future of youth and ensure a healthier society in J&K.
