Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday expressed surprise over granting of only two days custody parole to Jailed Lok Sabha MP Sheikh Abdul Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, to attend Parliament.
“Gurmeet Singh also calling himself Ram Rahim, convicted in rape and murder charges , has been out on parole for months since his imprisonment.
Meanwhile, we have the honorable MP Engineer Rashid, who has finally been granted just two days of custody parole to attend Parliament, and that too only by a High Court order. This is truly the “mother of democracy” at work!,” Mufti said in a post on X.
The Delhi High Court on Monday granted a two-day custody parole to Engineer Rashid to attend the ongoing Budget session of Parliament on February 11 and 13.
Engineer Rashid, who is lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail in a money laundering case for the past several years, won the Lok Sabha election as an independent candidate from the Baramulla Lok Sabha Constituency of Jammu and Kashmir last year.
Engineer’s brother and MLA Khursheed Ahmad Sheikh said ‘it was a matter of happiness for them that he has been granted parole’.
“For the last 11 days, he was on a hunger strike. I am celebrating this moment as he is ending his hunger strike. Also, the voices of 18 lakh people to whom he represents, will be heard in the parliament,” he said.
