Night chill intensifies in Kashmir

Jammu : The night chill deepened as minimum temperatures dropped further across the Kashmir valley on Sunday.
The Meteorological Centre Srinagar forecast generally dry weather till January 29.
There is a possibility of fresh spell of light rain/snow at isolated places during January 29 night and January 30 and 31. Overall, there is nothing significant till the end of January.
On February 1 and 2 the weather is likely to remain generally cloudy with the possibility of light rain/Snow at isolated places, while the weather will remain dry till February 5, it said.
Kashmir valley continued to experience colder nights and warmer days, with a significant drop in minimum temperatures and a notable rise in daytime temperatures, officials said.
The night temperature in Srinagar and other major weather stations of the Kashmir valley continued to plummet and recorded below freezing point while the day temperature witnessed a significant rise as Srinagar recorded a maximum of 14.6°C on Saturday with bright sun appearing during the day presuming a summer-like atmosphere.
The maximum temperature recorded on Saturday across all the weather stations of the valley was 4°C to 8°C above normal.
The 40-day-long harshest part of the winter “Chillia Kalan” will end at the end of January.
The minimum temperature recorded during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday at Srinagar further dropped and recorded a low of -5.6°C against the -4.1°C the previous night and this was still 1.8°C below the average for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during the period.
The tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded a low of -7.0°C while the famed ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir settled at -5.8°C on Sunday.
Qazigund on Srinagar Jammu national highway had a low of -5.0°C, Kokernag -2.5°C and the frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara recorded a low of 5-2°C, the MeT office said.
