DLSA Srinagar convenes Ist UTRC meeting for fair, expedited trials for under-trial prisoners

Srinagar : To address the significant issue of ensuring fair and expedited trials for under trial prisoners, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Srinagar, under the aegis of the Jammu & Kashmir Legal Services Authority, convened its first quarterly UTRC meeting for the year 2025 on Wednesday at District Court, Srinagar.
The meeting was held in compliance with the directions of Justice Atul Sreedharan, Executive Chairman, J&K Legal Services Authority (J&K LSA), and as per the Under Trial Review Committee (UTRC) meeting schedule issued by NALSA for the year 2025.
Jaffer Hussain Beg, Principal District & Sessions Judge (Chairman, DLSA) Srinagar chaired the meeting, attended by key stakeholders from the judiciary, police, administration, and medical fraternity.
This collaborative forum underscores the importance of a collective approach in safeguarding the rights of individuals awaiting trial.
During the meeting, the committee meticulously reviewed eight cases involving under trial prisoners. Each case was examined thoroughly through detailed discussions and deliberations, with the objective of understanding the specific circumstances of the individuals concerned. The committee subsequently formulated the recommendations aimed at expediting the judicial process, thereby upholding the principles of equity and justice.
Chairman, DLSA, emphasizing the significance of UTRC meetings, highlighted their critical role in strengthening the criminal justice system and safeguarding the fundamental rights of under trial prisoners. He reiterated the necessity of regular initiatives such as these to ensure a fair and efficient legal process, reflecting the commitment to justice and transparency.
The meeting was attended by several distinguished dignitaries, including Nusrat Ali Hakak, Sub-Judge/Secretary, DLSA Srinagar; Imtiyaz Hussain, SSP Srinagar; Sheikh Zulfikar Azad, SSP, Central Jail Srinagar; Meena Gowhar, Public Prosecuting Officer, Srinagar; Dr.Zeenat, Senior Medical Officer, Central Jail Srinagar; Saad Ganie, Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel and Assistant Legal Aid Defence Counsels, Srinagar.
DLSA Srinagar remains unwavering in its commitment to upholding the rights of under trial prisoners by ensuring that they receive fair and speedy trials. The UTRC meetings stand as a testament to this dedication, serving as a vital step towards achieving a more equitable and efficient legal system.
