Jammu: In a shocking incident, a 37-year-old man was shot dead in broad daylight at the busy Jewel Chowk in Jammu City on Tuesday.
An official said that at around 12.40 in the afternoon, a person identified as Sumit Jandial, son of Om Parkesh of Vijaypur, Samba was traveling in an SUV bearing registration number JK21G-0770 was attacked by unidentified persons in Jewel Chowk area. Eyewitnesses said that the unidentified gunmen arrived in a car and started firing indiscriminately at Jandial, who was driving the Red colour Thar Jeep. “The attackers fired six to seven rounds at the driver, injuring him seriously. The shooters managed to flee from the spot after leaving the man in a pool of blood,” they said. “The injured was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu for treatment where he succumbed to injuries,” said an official.
Meanwhile, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Jammu Anand Jain along with Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Jammu-Samba-Kathua Range, Shiv Kumar Sharma visited the spot to assess the situation.
Talking to reporters on visiting the spot ADGP Anand Jain said, “It is a gang war. He (Jandiyal) belonged to the Gataru gang of Vijaypur. Members of a rival gang fired on him. It is not a militancy related incident, but a case of rivalry.” He added that police have launched an operation to track down the attackers.
Meanwhile Police in a detailed statement exhorted people to remain calm and refrain from speculation, awaiting official updates from the police. “A firing incident occurred this afternoon in the Jewel Chowk area, under the jurisdiction of Police Station Nowabad. Upon receiving the information, ADGP Jammu, along with senior police officers, arrived at the scene,” said police in a statement. Reports indicate that one person has been seriously injured. The injured individual was promptly transported to GMC Jammu by a police team from PS Nowabad. An investigation has been initiated into the incident, and further details will be provided later. The people are urged to remain calm and refrain from speculation, awaiting official updates from the police
