Ganderbal: The Z-Morh Tunnel’s inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday is set to mark a historic milestone in the development of Kashmir. The long-awaited event has sparked celebrations throughout the region, with locals viewing the project as a gateway to year-round connectivity and expanded opportunities for businesses and residents alike.

With vibrant banners and decorations lining the streets, the air is filled with excitement as people eagerly await the momentous occasion. The tunnel is expected to transform the livelihoods of many, particularly in the realms of tourism, accessibility, and economic growth.

“This tunnel will benefit not just Sonamarg, but the entire region of Kashmir,” said Bashir Ahmad, a local shopkeeper. “For years, we have been cut off during winters, but this project will open up new opportunities. We’re hopeful tourism will flourish and travel will become more accessible, even in the harshest weather.”

The 6.5 km Z-Morh Tunnel, located along the Srinagar-Sonamarg route, will be a vital link ensuring uninterrupted access to Sonamarg, benefiting local businesses and tourism. The tunnel will allow year-round travel, creating new opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

“We see this as a game-changer,” said Abdul Hameed, a hotel owner in Sonamarg. “The tunnel will revive tourism not just in Sonamarg, but throughout Kashmir.”

Ahead of the event, authorities have put in place stringent security measures, with the Special Protection Group (SPG), J&K Police, and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) working to ensure a smooth and secure inauguration. The district administration is working around the clock to ensure all logistics are in place.

The Z-Morh Tunnel will not only ease transportation but is also set to turn the Sonamarg-Srinagar route into an all-weather travel corridor, addressing the challenges posed by winter cutoffs in the past.

The inauguration of the tunnel marks the beginning of a new era for the region, one that promises to significantly boost economic growth, tourism, and improve the livelihoods of the local communities.
