G’bal: The Z-Morh tunnel, set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, is expected to open up Sonamarg to year-round tourism and contribute to its development as a prime ski resort, according to Jammu and Kashmir’s former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
During a visit to the project site on Saturday, Abdullah reviewed preparations for the Prime Minister’s visit and shared his optimistic views on the tunnel’s potential. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “Visited Sonamarg today to review preparations for PM @narendramodi ji’s visit on Monday. The inauguration of the Z-Morh tunnel will open Sonamarg to tourism all year round. Sonamarg will now be developed as a great ski resort.” The tunnel, which provides an all-weather road link, will significantly benefit local residents by allowing them to remain in the region throughout the winter months, eliminating the need to relocate. Additionally, the completion of the tunnel will shorten the travel time between Srinagar, Kargil, and Leh, making it easier to access these areas year-round.
Abdullah also highlighted the project’s role in boosting the region’s tourism and infrastructure. The Z-Morh tunnel, part of the critical Srinagar-Leh highway, ensures that Sonamarg remains accessible even in harsh winter conditions, which have previously cut off access due to heavy snow. The project is expected to promote both tourism and local employment opportunities, further enhancing the economy of the region. With stunning aerial views shared by Abdullah, the images also captured the scenic beauty of Sonamarg, reinforcing the area’s growing potential as a major winter sports destination.
