Srinagar/Dec,25: The recent doubling of the price of Kashmiri “Kandur Roti,” a staple food item in Kashmir Valleyand Kashmiri Speaking parts of Jammu division , has triggered strong reactions from the local populations acrossKashmir with local backers defending price hike citing rise in flourprices a reason. Usually sold at Rs 5, the lical bread much popularly called “Kandar Roti” is now priced at Rs 10, a change that has raised concerns throughout the Valley, especially among the poor living belowthepovertyline(BPL).
Sofi Abdullah Majeed Pampori, President Kashmir Bread Makers and Bakers Union, defended the price hike, stating that it was necessary due to the rising costs of key ingredients like ghee and flour. He said that after extensive discussions, the decision was made to adjust the prices in response to mounting operational expenses, and it had been communicated to the authorities.However, many residents, particularly those in lower-income groups, have voiced their displeasure over the price increase.
A resident in Habakal area of Srinagar said “We can’t afford to spend Rs 50 for five rotis, which used to cost just Rs 25. A small increase would have been manageable, but this is an excessive hike.”
A resident in Baghat Burzulla area of Srinagar said that the new price is unaffordable for many, especially those earning between Rs 200 and Rs 300 a day. “This price hike is hitting us hard, particularly during the harsh winter. I urge the government to step in and set a fair price that everyone can afford,” he said
