Srinagar : The prolonged dry spell has witnessed an end at multiple places across the Valley as the several areas witnessed the season’s first snowfall while the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir—Srinagar, witnessed light rains in the morning hours of Thursday.
Reports said several areas including Tangmarg, Sopore town, Shopian main town, Aherbal Kulgam and Bandipora received the season’s first snowfall today.
The reports of snowfall during the last 24 hours have also been received from Sonamarg-10 inches, Zojila pass-12 inches, Z Gali-11 inches, Sadhna Pass-13 inches, Sinthan Top-14 inches, Margan Top-10 inches, Peer Ki Gali-11 inches, Tangmarg-4 inches, Heerpora Shopian-4 inches, Shopian main town-2 inches, Kulgam Aherbal-3 inches, Chiranbal Kulgam-4 inches, Pahalgam-2 inches, Baltal Pahalgam-8 inches, Sopore main town-3 inches, Pattan Baramulla-2 inches, Khan Sahib Budgam-3 inches and Bandipora main-2 cm.
The fresh snowfall has been received during the forecast of two-day wet spell from December 11 and 12. During this period, light rainfall was also recorded in Srinagar today.
Moreover, the Meteorological department (MeT) has prepared the data till December 11, saying that the deficit precipitation has gone further up to 75 per cent across Jammu and Kashmir from October 01, 2024 to December 11, 2024.
The highest deficit has been recorded in Shopian with 96 per cent followed by Poonch with 95 per cent and Kulgam and Budgam with 94 per cent and 92 per cent.
Srinagar has recorded a deficit rainfall of 85 per cent. However, Samba is the only place across J&K where above normal rainfall has been recorded as against the normal precipitation of 20.7 mm, the station has recorded a precipitation of 47 mm during the period.
In Kupwara, the lowest deficit rainfall of only 38 per cent during the period, the data reads.
Meanwhile, the weatherman here has predicted no wet spell till December 20.
Director MeT, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said that the weather would remain dry for the next two days while on December, there is a forecast of cloudy weather conditions.
On December 16 & 17, the weather would remain generally while from December 18-20th, the cloudy weather is expected in Jammu and Kashmir.
Moreover, the MeT in its advisory has stated that the cold & dry weather will generally prevail over many stations during the next 5 days. “In view of fresh snowfall, sub-freezing temperature & icy conditions over roads of important passes and higher reaches, the tourists, travelers and transporters are advised to follow administration and traffic advisory,” the advisory reads
