Srinagar/Dec 5 :Nasir Aslam Wani, Advisor to Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, announced on Thursday that the Council of Ministers have formally submitted a proposal to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to reinstate December 5 as a public holiday in commemoration of the late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah’s anniversary. This proposal comes after the holiday was controversially canceled by the LG administration in recent years.
Talking reporters during his visit to the mausoleum of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah at Hazratbal, Nasir Aslam Wani expressed hope that the holiday will be restored in time for next year. “This proposal has already been forwarded to the LG’s office and we are optimistic that the people of Jammu and Kashmir will once again observe this significant day,” he said.
Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, the founder of the National Conference (NC), is remembered for his immense contribution to the region’s political landscape. He played a crucial role in liberating Jammu and Kashmir from autocratic rule, shaping its political identity, and securing vital rights for the people, such as the freedom of speech and other democratic freedoms. Wani paid heartfelt tributes to the Sheikh, acknowledging his enduring legacy and the transformative role he played in shaping the region’s modern history.
