Jammu: Disability Initiatives University of Jammu and Department of Home Science, in collaboration with JIGER NGO organized a vibrant event to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) 2024. The celebration, guided by this year’s theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” highlighted the crucial role of empowering persons with disabilities and fostering their leadership potential.
The event was graced by the presence of Ramesh Kumar, IAS, Divisional Commissioner Jammu, as the Chief Guest, along with Prof. Parkash Anthal, Dean of Students Welfare, University of Jammu, as the Guest of Honor, and Arvind Karwani, Relief and Rehabilitation Commissioner (Migrant), as the Special Guest.
Chief Guest Ramesh Kumar, IAS, commended the efforts of the organizers, stating, “This celebration is a powerful reminder of the potential of persons with disabilities and the responsibility we all share in creating a truly inclusive society.” He remarked that persons with disabilities are actually specially endowed and as much capable and proficient as others. He further stated that the uniqueness of divyangjan should be celebrated every day.
Prof. Parkash Anthal highlighted the role of educational institutions in promoting inclusivity, while Arvind Karwani emphasized the importance of accessibility and sustained support for individuals with disabilities. He also talked about providing equal opportunities and prospects to all individuals.
Earlier Prof. Sarika Manhas, Coordinator Disability Initiatives and HoD, Department of Home Science in her welcome address emphasized the importance of collective efforts in creating an inclusive society where every individual can thrive and lead. Her address set the tone for the event, reflecting the University’s commitment to fostering inclusivity. This was followed by the introductory remarks by Sandhya Dhar, President of JIGER NGO, who passionately spoke about the challenges faced by persons with disabilities and the need for amplifying their voices.
Prof. Shashi Manhas, Provost Hostels (Girls) and Prof. Vishav Raksha, HoD Sociology, JU also shared their views on the occasion.
The day’s proceedings included a heart warming cultural performance by special children, who captivated the audience with their extraordinary talent and enthusiasm. Display stalls by disabled entrepreneurs added another dimension to the event, showcasing their innovation, resilience, and entrepreneurial spirit. A group of specially abled young achievers were also felicitated on the occasion. Later in the day a panel discussion on the theme “Empowering Persons with Disabilities for Leadership Roles” brought together experts, activists, and leaders with disabilities to share insights on breaking barriers and fostering inclusion. The discussion emphasized the importance of inclusive policies, education, and support systems in enabling persons with disabilities to take on leadership roles in society. The panellist included Kamal Nain Bhan and Smt. Madhu Bhan (Association of Aphasic and Deaf), Dr. Trilochan Kumar (Asstt Prof, Chandigarh University), Pallvi Sethi (Entrepreneur), Gurdeep Singh (Disability Rights Activist), Tilakraj Sudan (World record holder), Monika Badgal (Scholar, Central University, Jammu), Vishav preet Singh (Youth activist), Nusrat Beig (National level divyang Basketball player), and Diya Raina (Artist).
