New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday called upon the people irrespective of caste, religion and region to remain united as without unity, the Constitution and democracy cannot be protected.

Addressing a rally to defend the Constitution at the Ramlila Maidan here, Kharge said, “This is a historical time, if we want to have something then we need to have unity. Without unity you all cannot get anything. If you all are not united from Jammu and Kashmir to Kanyakumari and from Bengal to Gujarat, we wont be able to achieve anything.”

“Every organisation of the country wants that the Constitution should be protected. If the Constitution is safe then we all are safe. Therefore it is necessary that we all should remain united save our Constitution. Different political parties are working in this direction in their own ways. Besides saving the Constitution we also have to save our democracy. If the Constitution and democracy are not saved, our rights, share and participation will also not be saved,” Kharge said.

He further said, “The Prime Minister is leaving no stone unturned in breaking the unity of the country. Our fight is against the hatred they spread and for this political power is extremely necessary”.

He said that during the British era only a few people had the right to vote, which included landlord and the rich people. But after becoming the Prime Minister of the country, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru gave the right to vote to everyone.

Kharge also slammed the BJP saying that the ‘party that talks about morality is doing immoral things’ like stealing votes from EVM, poaching MLAs as they did in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttarakhand and Manipur, stealing pensions and MSP of farmers.

“The soul of democracy lies in free and fair election. We only said that election should be conducted fairly. Don’t steal votes. I have received complaints that in one hour more than thousand votes have been cast and even after the elections, 99 percent battery is still left in the EVM, how is this possible. I again say we need to protect and strengthen our democracy,” Kharge said.

Criticising the slogan of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Ek hain to safe hain” Kharge said that BJP is creating dispute in the name of survey. They don’t let anyone remain safe.”

Talking about caste census, Kharge said that when Rahul Gandhi talks about caste census then Modi says that, Congress is dividing the country, but through this, Congress wants to unite the country, by letting the people know about their participation and share.
