Mumbau: Days after the Congress-National Conference Government in Jammu and Kashmir introduced a resolution in the Assembly to restore Article 370, which had granted special status to the erstwhile state, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday asserted that the provision would not be restored even if Indira Gandhi were to return from heaven.
Speaking at an election rally in Maharashtra, Shah said, “Even if Indira Gandhi were to return from heaven, Article 370 won’t be restored.” Responding to Congress leader and former Union Minister Sushilkumar Shinde’s remark that he was scared during his visit to Srinagar’s Lal Chowk, Shah said, “Shinde ji, go to Kashmir now along with your grandkids, no harm will come to you.”
“During the 10 years of the Sonia-Manmohan regime, militants used to come freely from Pakistan and trigger bomb blasts here,” Shah added. The Union Minister made similar comments a few days ago at another rally in Maharashtra, where he stated, “Even the fourth generation of Rahul Gandhi will not be able to restore Article 370 in Kashmir”. “They passed the resolution to restore Article 370 in Kashmir. Even the fourth generation of Rahul Gandhi will not be able to restore Article 370 in Kashmir. Prime Minister Modi has done a lot of work for the security of the country,” Shah said in Maharashtra’s Buldhana.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also criticised the Congress at an election rally in Pune, accusing it of speaking the “language of Pakistan” by seeking the restoration of Article 370. He asserted that the contentious provision has been buried deep in the ground. “Because of your wishes and blessings, your sevak Modi buried Article 370 deep in the ground. Article 370 worked to divide the nation; it gave room to the separatist movement in the Kashmir Valley,” PM Modi emphasised.
Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which allowed limited autonomy and a state constitution, among other provisions, was abrogated on August 5, 2019. The state was reorganised into union territories. The Omar Abdullah-led government, which came to power after the recent election–the first since the abrogation–has vowed to restore full statehood and reinstate Article 370.
