Srinagar: No fresh contact was established with militants after a brief exchange of fire between militants and security forces in the outskirts of Srinagar on Sunday morning, officials said.
“After initial firing between the militants and the security early today there was no fresh contact established with the militants in the woods of Zabarwan area of Srinagar”, they said.
“The militants might have escaped deep into the forest”, a security official said.
A joint team of security forces launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) on specific intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists in the Zabarwan forest area of Srinagar Sunday.
“As the security forces reached a particular spot, the hiding militants opened fire and the security forces also effectively retaliated, triggering an encounter”, they said.
This was the second encounter that took place in less than 24 hours in Kashmir valley.
On Saturday a gunfight erupted between the militants and security in Rampora Sopore during a cordon and search operation during which an identified militant was killed. Search operations are still going on in the area.
