“Region’s future should be shaped through dialogue, the restoration of constitutional rights, and the empowerment of its people. The people of Jammu and Kashmir have always been committed to India, and this resolution is a reflection of our desire to preserve our unique identity while ensuring that our constitutional rights are respected,” Omar Abdullah said

The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly passed a resolution calling for the restoration of the region’s special status, which was revoked in 2019 with the abrogation of Article 370. This move has triggered widespread reactions, with protests erupting from BJP legislators who vehemently opposed the resolution, labeling it “anti-national.”

Reaffirming Constitutional Guarantees, Regional Identity: The resolution emphasized the importance of the special status, which previously safeguarded Jammu and Kashmir’s unique identity, culture, and rights. The Assembly highlighted the need for restoring these guarantees, balancing national unity with the aspirations and cultural preservation of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. According to the resolution, the special status had played a pivotal role in ensuring the region’s autonomy while maintaining its integration with India.

Anti Resolution Remarks Of P M Modi, HM Shah Trigger A National Row On Art 370: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah reacted strongly to the Assembly’s decision, expressing their firm opposition to the reinstatement of Article 370? Both leaders accused the Congress-NC alliance of undermining national unity and conspiring to reverse the progress made since the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in 2019. PM Modi vowed that Article 370 would never be restored, asserting that the move to revoke the special status was essential for integrating Jammu and Kashmir fully into the Indian Union. He further claimed that the revocation had brought about significant development and reduced militancy in the region.

HM Shah For No Restoration Of Art 370 Even After 4 Generations Of Sharad Pawar:  Union Home Minister Amit Shah hit out at the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) over the resolution demanding the restoration of Article 370 passed in the Jammu-Kashmir assembly, and strongly affirmed that the erstwhile article would not be reinstated even after four generations of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SP) supremo Sharad Pawar. “National Conference and Congress party passed a resolution in the J&K assembly to bring back Article 370, that Kashmir is not an integral part of India. Today, I am saying it on the land of Sambhaji Maharaj – Sharad Pawar sahab, even if your four generations come, we will not let Article 370 be back,” he said.

CM Omar Defends Assembly Resolution: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, a key proponent of the resolution, defended the Assembly’s decision. He described the resolution as a critical reminder to the Central Government about the promises made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah emphasized that the region’s future should be shaped through dialogue, the restoration of constitutional rights, and the empowerment of its people. “The people of Jammu and Kashmir have always been committed to India, and this resolution is a reflection of our desire to preserve our unique identity while ensuring that our constitutional rights are respected,” Omar Abdullah said. He reiterated that the abrogation of Article 370 had caused deep wounds in the hearts of the people, and the resolution represented an opportunity to heal these wounds and initiate a meaningful dialogue with New Delhi.

Dy CM Surinder Choudhary’s Response  Spl Status Resolution: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary described the resolution as a commitment to fulfilling the promises made by the government regarding land, job rights, and statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.  Choudhary, a member of the National Conference, expressed dissatisfaction with post-abrogation policies and emphasized that the resolution was essential for protecting the local population’s interests. “We must ensure that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have the same rights and privileges as citizens in other parts of India, particularly concerning land and job reservations. This resolution is a step toward achieving that goal,” Choudhary said. He also criticized the BJP-led Central Government for failing to deliver on its promises of development and empowerment in the region.

J&K Cong Chief Tariq Karra’s Endorsement Of Assembly Resolution: Jammu & Kashmir Congress chief Tariq Hameed Karra welcomed the resolution passed by the Assembly, stating that it reflected the “urges and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.” He praised the Assembly for seeking the restoration of constitutional and democratic rights for the region, including fully empowered statehood along with all constitutional guarantees. “After the Supreme Court verdict, this is the first democratic expression of the people of J&K, reflecting their true aspirations. There should be no reason for the Central Government to deny the rights and protections to the people of J&K that are already in place in many other parts of the country,” Karra said. He further emphasized that the Indian National Congress (INC) is committed to fighting for the restoration of statehood and safeguarding the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, including land, job reservations, and the preservation of its unique cultural identity.

Support Of JKNC, Cong Legislator To Assembly Resolution: The resolution garnered significant support from National Conference (NC) legislators, with Health Minister Sakina Itoo seconding the motion.  The NC, with the backing of several non-coalition members, secured 60 votes in favor of the resolution, despite strong opposition from the BJP. MLA Wagoor-Kreeri Constituency Irfan Hafiz and MLA Rajouri Iftikar Ahmad also voiced their support, arguing that the people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve the same rights, including job and land reservations, that are available in other parts of India.

BJP’s Dramatic Protest Against Resolution: The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fiercely protested the resolution, accusing the NC-led government of betraying national interests. All 28 BJP legislators stormed the well of the House, tore up copies of the resolution, and raised slogans against the motion.  The protests led to multiple adjournments and chaotic scenes in the Assembly. Senior BJP legislator Vikram Randhawa said that NC was exploiting the emotions of the people of Jammu and Kashmir for political gain.  He accused the ruling coalition of pandering to separatist forces by pushing for the restoration of Article 370.

BJP’s “Parallel Assembly” After Eviction Of Its MLAs From House: Following their ejection from the Assembly for disrupting the proceedings, BJP legislators set up a “parallel assembly” on the lawns of the Legislative Assembly. During this symbolic protest, BJP leaders condemned the resolution, accusing the NC of emotional manipulation and promising to continue their opposition. MLA Akhnoor Mohan Lal accused Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather of biased behavior, alleging that BJP members were manhandled by marshals under the Speaker’s orders when they attempted to voice their opposition to the resolution.  “We wanted to raise our objections, but we were not allowed to speak,” Lal said, claiming that the BJP would continue its protests outside the Assembly.

Chaos in the Assembly; BJP Legislators Injured: Amid the chaos in the Assembly, several BJP legislators were reportedly injured. The four BJP members, including Mohan Lal and RS Pathania, sustained injuries during a scuffle with marshals. Mohan Lal was taken to the Bones and Joints Hospital for treatment for a fractured hand. Despite their injuries, BJP leaders remained resolute, with Mohan Lal declaring, “I am stable now and not discouraged. I will continue to perform my duties and raise my voice for the unity and integrity of the country. We will not allow anti-national voices to prevail.”

“This political standoff underscores the complex relationship between the region and the rest of India. Moving forward, the Central Government must take a balanced approach, initiating dialogue with regional leaders to address the concerns surrounding constitutional guarantees and statehood.  Additionally, there is a need for continued engagement on economic and developmental issues to foster trust, stability, and integration, ensuring that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are not left behind in India’s broader progress.”

The Resolution’s Political Impact, Future Outlook: The passing of this resolution has reignited the debate over Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, with regional parties advocating for its restoration and the BJP firmly opposing any reversal. The resolution represents a deep divide in the region’s politics, with the NC and INC standing in opposition to the BJP’s narrative of a unified India without special privileges for any region. As both sides prepare for further clashes in the coming months, the future governance of Jammu and Kashmir remains uncertain. The resolution has set the stage for a potential showdown between regional aspirations for autonomy and the Central Government’s firm stance on national unity.

A Call For Dialogue, Reconciliation: Congress Chief Tariq Hameed Karra summed up the significance of the resolution, calling it a “much-needed opportunity” for engagement between the people of Jammu and Kashmir and New Delhi. He urged the Central Government to respect the aspirations of the people, warning that continued resistance to dialogue would only deepen the mistrust between the region and the rest of India. The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly’s resolution is not just a political statement; it reflects the long-standing grievances of the region’s people. Whether this will lead to meaningful change or further polarization remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—the question of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status is far from settled.

Kashmir Horizon View: The recent passage of the resolution in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly calling for the restoration of the region’s special status has reignited a highly sensitive and contentious debate on Article 370.  This resolution, which was passed amid strong opposition from the BJP, has significant political implications, as it reflects the deep aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.  The move has sparked a strong reaction from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, who have categorically stated that the abrogation of Article 370 will not be reversed.  They argue that the revocation was necessary for national integration and progress in the region. However, NC and other regional parties, such as the Indian National Congress (INC), strongly support the resolution, emphasizing the need for the restoration of constitutional guarantees and statehood.  Tariq Hameed Karra, the Jammu and Kashmir Congress Chief, has voiced his party’s support for the resolution, pointing out that it reflects the legitimate aspirations of the people and calling for the restoration of statehood and other democratic rights.  He criticized the BJP for its opposition, accusing the party of prioritizing political interests over the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. This political standoff underscores the complex relationship between the region and the rest of India. Moving forward, the Central Government must take a balanced approach, initiating dialogue with regional leaders to address the concerns surrounding constitutional guarantees and statehood.  Additionally, there is a need for continued engagement on economic and developmental issues to foster trust, stability, and integration, ensuring that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are not left behind in India’s broader progress.
