One Day Seminar on “Muslim Scientists and their Contributions- Past and Present”

Srinagar: The Department of Islamic Studies, Headed by Dr. Zaira Ashraf Khan Organised a One Day Seminar in Collaboration with Literary Activities Committee of the College, Convened by Dr. Firdous Nazir on the Theme “Muslim Scientists and Their Contributions -Past and Present”.
The Seminar aimed to bring the students from the disciplines of Science and Social Science together and remind ourselves of the contributions of Muslim Scientists and the legacy that they had left behind for the world to follow. The Seminar was presided over by honourable Principal of the college, Prof. Muhammad Shafi under whose guidance and stewardship such thought provoking event was conducted. It was categorised into Technical Sessions given by the Expert Speakers to give an indepth insights into the inventions and discoveries of Muslim Scientists and brief Presentations given by students on the Topic. The first Technical Session was given by Dr. Rafiq Ahmad , Head Department of Bio Chemistry, who spoke extensively on the Topic ,The Legacy of Muslim Contribution to Chemistry and Medicine wherein he discussed the contributions of various Muslim Scientists in the field of Medicine as the likes of Ibn Sina, Al Razi, Ibn Al-Haythem, Al-Zahrawi, Ibn Rushd, ibn Nafis, Al Jahiz and Al Majusi and their contributions in the field of Opthalmology, Neurosciences and Anatomy. The second Technical Session was given by Dr. Gowher Hussain Bhat, Head Department of Physics , a celebrated Physicist of the valley who has many research works credited to his name. He spoke about the contributions of Muslim Physicists and Mathematicians- Past and Present. To mention a few, Al Khwarizmi, Al Biruni , Al Razi, Muhammad al Fazari from the past and Dr. Abdul Qadir Khan, APJ Abdul Kalam , Dr. Abdus Salam, Dr. Homi Jahangir Bhabha, Prof. Amin Sofi, Prof. Javaid Sheikh and their contributions in the current times. It was followed by the student presentations and Question Answer session. The seminar instilled valour for research in students and a way forward to carry the legacy of seeking and imparting Knowledge, a path that was embarked by our predecessors. Vote of Thanks was presented by Prof. Arshid Rasool , Head Political Science and the event was graced with the presence of Students and faculties of various disciplines .
