As the 30th October approaches, devotees from across Kashmir and beyond prepare to gather at the revered shrine of Hazrat Sheikh Noor ud din Noorani (RA) at Charar-i-Sharief to honor the life, teachings, and profound legacy of one of the Valley’s most beloved saints. On the night of 29th October, a grand ShabKhawani (night of prayers) held at Charar-i-Sharief, inviting all to remember and reflect upon the life and miracles of this esteemed spiritual leader.
Early Life, Origins: Hazrat Sheikh Noor ud Din Noorani (RA) affectionately known as Nund Reshi and ‘Alamdar –e-Kashmir ,” was born in 1377 CE in the village of Qaimoh in Kashmir. He was born to pious parents who instilled in him a strong sense of faith from an early age. His early education was grounded in the teachings of Islam, and he later dedicated his life to enlightening the Kashmiri people with messages of love, tolerance, and devotion to Allah.
His message, deeply rooted in the tenets of Islam, emphasized humility, compassion, and service to humanity. Sheikh Noor ud Din (RA) teachings crossed boundaries of caste, creed and class, urging people to come together in harmony.
Teachings, Spiritual Philosophy: As a leading voice of Reshi (a Sufi order prominent in Kashmir), Hazrat Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani (RA) promoted unity, peace, and devotion to the Divine. He encouraged people to live simple lives, free from greed and materialism, advocating for a harmonious coexistence across all sections of society. Through his poetry, he conveyed spiritual wisdom, often using metaphors from the natural world to impart lessons of humility, compassion, and piety. His verses still resonate, speaking to the hearts of those who seek solace in this message of love and kindness.
The saint’s teachings were also inclusive, advocating for unity beyond religious boundaries. His compassionate approach appealed to people across faiths, and his words emphasized mutual respect, humility, and service to humanity.
Miracles (Karamats) Of Hazrat Sheikh Noor Ud Din Noorani (Ra)

1) Water from the Stone: One of the most famous miracles occurred when Sheikh Noor ud Din (RA) was meditating in a cave and had no water to drink. It is believed he struck a stone with his staff, and fresh water began to flow from it. This stream is said to have continue flowing and provided water to travellers and devotees, a testament to his closeness to Allah and his ability to harness nature through divine blessing.
2) Protection against Flooding: It is said that during one year of intense flooding, his prayers protected his followers and nearby villages from harm. While many parts of Kashmir were affected by the flood waters, areas close to his abode remained untouched. This miracle strengthened the faith of his followers and demonstrated his protective spiritual influence.
3) Healing the Sick:- Hazrat Sheikh Noor ud din (RA) was known for his healing powers . Many would come to him with physical and mental ailments, and through his prayers, countless people were healed. Stories recount how he restored health to the gravely ill and brought peace to troubled hearts. Even today, people pray for his blessings in times of illness and distress, believing in his spiritual intercession.
4) Multiplication of Food: Sheikh Noor ud Din (RA) often led a life of asceticism, with little to eat. However, when travellers or followers would visit him in large numbers, it is believed that he would pray over the small amount of food available, and it would miraculously suffice to feed everyone present. This miracle of food multiplication symbolized his generosity and Allah’s provision through him.
5) Control over Nature: Numerous stories recount how Hazrat Noor ud din (RA) demonstrated control over natural elements. For example, during intense storms or extreme weather, he would pray, and the conditions would calm, protecting people and crops. His connection with nature reflects the belief that he was a friend of Allah (Wali Allah), with power over creation granted by divine will.

They reflect his status as a deeply beloved saint, whose life was marked by divine intervention, compassion, and unwavering faith. Urs Murarak, Celebrations at Charar I Sharief: As a regular visitor to the sacred ZiyaratSharief, I recently witnessed the community’s preparations for the Urs Mubarak. On Sunday, October 27, many devotees thronged the shrine, engaging in namaz, zikr, recitation of the Quran, and DaroodSharif, creating an atmosphere of spiritual elevation. PoshakBandi, a special ceremony was held on October 28, with devotees coming together in reverence.
During Urs Mubarak, the shrine and surrounding area are adorned with lights, reflecting the love and respect the community holds for Sheikh Noor ud Din Noorani (RA). Stalls line the streets, offering food, drinks, and traditional items, adding to the sense of communal celebration.
Message From Sheikh Nooraud Din Noorani (RA): He taught that life’s true essence lies in simplicity and connection with Allah, rejecting the materialistic pursuits that distract us from our Creator. His poetry, a vehicle for his message, advocated moral integrity, humility, and kindness, reminding Muslims to follow the path of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and uphold the values of Islam in their daily lives.
