Srinagar : Today’s encounter in Srinagar’s Khanyar area, where a top Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) commander was killed, took place after a gap of nearly two years.
The last gunfight in Srinagar was witnessed on September 15, 2022, in the Nowgam area, where two militants were killed. The sequence of encounters in recent years has demonstrated the ongoing security efforts and the challenges faced in Srinagar, once regarded as a militancy-free zone.
A timeline of major encounters that have occurred in the Srinagar district over the past many years is as:
Year 2024: November 02, Khanyar, Srinagar: LeT commander killed in an encounter breaking the lull since September 15, 2022.
September 14, Nowgam, Srinagar: Two militants killed in an operation that temporarily restored quiet to the city.
June 13, Bemina, Srinagar: Two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants, including a Pakistani national, were killed in an encounter with Security Forces (SFs) in the Bemina area of Srinagar.
May 27, Soura, Srinagar: Two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant were killed in an encounter with police in the Soura area of Srinagar.
April 10, Bishambar Nagar, Srinagar: Two foreign militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) were killed in an encounter with security forces.
March 10, Hazratbal, Srinagar: A Pakistani militant of LeT was killed in a brief shootout in the Hazratbal area of Srinagar, the capital of J&K.
March 16, Nowgam, Srinagar: Three militants of The Resistance Front (TRF), a shadow outfit of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), were killed in an encounter in the Nowgam area of Srinagar.
February 5, Zakura, Srinagar: Security Forces (SFs) killed two The Resistance Front (TRF) militant during a gunfight in the Zakura area of Srinagar. January 3, Shalimar, Srinagar: One foreign militant of LeT was killed. Asked about the encounter at Khanyar area of Srinagar after a long gap, IGP Kashmir V K Birdhi said that inputs about movement of militants keep on coming. “Today’s gunfight at Khanyar is a significant achievement,” the IGP said
