Srinagar, Oct 30 (UNI) Jammu & Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP) legislator Waheed Parra on Wednesday called for the scrapping of the reservation policy in J&K, stating that it could jeopardize the long-term quality and competence of the region’s institutions.

This year the government granted 10 percent reservation to the Pahari community in the Union Territory, taking the reserved quota for different categories to 60 percent, leaving only 40 percent for the open merit.

The reservation policy has been termed by many as total injustice and ‘murder’ of open merit candidates.

Parra voiced his concern after the 2023 Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (PSC) announced the results, spotlighting what he termed an “injustice” against open merit candidates.

He highlighted that open merit selections constituted only 40% of the total, despite representing over 70% of the region’s population.

In a post on X, Parra said J&K PSC 2023 results reveal only 40% Open Merit selections, despite over 70% of the population.

“The government must scrap this unjust policy against merit and ensure reservations reflects true population proportions. J&K’s youth deserves inclusion, not exclusion. This isn’t limited to jobs but compromising long term quality and competence in all institutions,” the PDP MLA said.

In the past, Srinagar Member Parliament Ruhullah Mehdi and former Mayor Junaid Mattoo had spoken against the recruitment quota.
