  • Militancy Free J&K Our Sacred Pledge, Committed to National Security: LG Sinha

“The militant attacks, targeting both security forces and civilians, have reignited concerns about cross-border militancy and left the region on high alert.  As the authorities grapple with the rising violence, the tragic loss of life and the boldness of these assaults underscore the persistent threat to stability in the union territory.”

A sudden surge in militant attacks has plunged Jammu and Kashmir into turmoil, claiming more than a dozen lives in just two weeks and shattering the fragile peace that followed the much-anticipated assembly elections.  The militant attacks, targeting both security forces and civilians, have reignited concerns about cross-border militancy and left the region on high alert.  As the authorities grapple with the rising violence, the tragic loss of life and the boldness of these assaults underscore the persistent threat to stability in the union territory.

Attack On Army Vehicle Near Gulmarg: On Thursday evening, a militant attack targeted an Army vehicle just a few kilometers away from the tourist hotspot of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.  The ambush resulted in the deaths of two Army personnel and two civilian porters, while several others sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. In response, security forces launched a large-scale search operation along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Gulmarg area, sealing all routes surrounding the attack site to prevent the militants from escaping.

Laborer Attacked In Pulwama: Just a few hours before the Gulmarg attack, militants opened fire on a laborer from Uttar Pradesh in the Tral area of Pulwama district. The laborer was severely injured in the incident and was quickly transported to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Deadly Attack In Gagangir G’bal: Only days earlier, a brutal militant attack occurred in Kashmir’s Gagangir Ganderbal district on October 20. Seven people, including six non-local laborers and a local doctor, were killed when militants opened fire at them at the Z-Morh tunnel construction site. The shocking attack left the entire region on high alert.

Shopian Attack On Bihar Laborer: On October 18, another laborer from Bihar fell victim to militants in the Shopian district. The laborer, shot nearly a dozen times, was found dead in the Wachi area of Zainapora, his bullet-riddled body lying in a field—a grim reminder of the violence plaguing the region.

LG Sinha’s Firm Stance: In the aftermath of these tragic incidents, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha stressed that there should be “no laxity” in dealing with militancy and its supporters.  Speaking to police, army, and central forces, Sinha emphasized the need for collective efforts to root out militancy from Jammu and Kashmir. His call for intensified efforts came during his speech at the Police Commemoration Day at the Armed Police Complex in Zewan, Srinagar, where he condemned the loss of innocent lives as intolerable.

Govt Officials Address G’bal Attack: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, accompanied by his advisor Nasir Aslam Wani and several cabinet ministers joined LG Sinha in condemning the Ganderbal attack.  “The attack in Ganderbal is an unforgivable act. Innocent lives were senselessly taken, and such brutality cannot be condoned,” Abdullah said, urging the police to quickly track down the perpetrators and ensure justice for the victims.

“Unified Effort Against Militancy”, Says LG Sinha: Lt. Governor Sinha underscored the need for heightened vigilance and uncompromising efforts against militancy. He warned that the threat of cross-border militancy continues to persist, urging security forces to remain alert to thwart any attempts to destabilize peace in the region.  Sinha called for a collective approach, saying, “A unified effort is essential to eradicate militancy from the soil of Jammu and Kashmir.” He also expressed concern about the continuous threat posed by militants from across the border, emphasizing that peace in J&K is under persistent threat. “There are ongoing efforts to disrupt peace in J&K, and we must stay vigilant,” he warned.

LG Sinha’s UHQ Meeting: In a high-level Unified Headquarters (UHQ) meeting held in Jammu, LG Manoj Sinha directed security agencies to eradicate militancy from Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting focused on strengthening the security grid and enhancing inter-agency cooperation.  He urged officials to formulate a comprehensive strategy for anti-militancy operations, calling for the dismantling of militant networks and bringing those responsible for recent attacks to justice. Sinha’s directives also included efforts to tackle the “narco-terror ecosystem” and “Over Ground Worker (OGW) networks” that aid militants.  He emphasized, “It is our duty and top priority to ensure a secure, peaceful, and stable life for the common man. A terror-free Jammu Kashmir is our sacred pledge.”

LG’s Stress On Coordination,Vigilance: During the UHQ meeting, Sinha instructed security agencies to enhance coordination and ensure real-time information sharing for effective counter-militancy measures. “Preparedness and agility are critical in responding to potential security challenges,” he highlighted. Senior officials from the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, paramilitary forces, and intelligence agencies participated in the meeting, where various security aspects were discussed in detail.

Back-to-Back Security Reviews: In recent weeks, LG Sinha chaired multiple security reviews, stressing the need for upgrading security measures at key infrastructure projects.  He also chaired a security review in Srinagar, with top police and administration officials in attendance. The meetings focused on ensuring better coordination among various security agencies to maintain law and order across the Union Territory.

Tribute To The Fallen Soldiers, Porters: On Friday, October 25, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha paid floral tributes to the soldiers and civilian porters who were killed in the militant attack in Gulmarg the day before. Visiting the 15 Corps headquarters of the Indian Army in Srinagar, also known as Chinar Corps, Sinha honored those who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. “Paid homage to the brave soldiers and defense porters who made the supreme sacrifice in service to the nation in Butapathri Sector on October 24, 2024,” the Lieutenant Governor said in a heartfelt post on social media platform X.

CM Omar Leads Tributes on Police Commemoration Day: On Police Commemoration Day, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah paid tribute to police martyrs during a solemn ceremony at the Police Martyrs Memorial in Zewan, Srinagar.  Accompanied by his Council of Ministers and senior officials, Abdullah led the gathering in offering floral tributes to the brave policemen who sacrificed their lives for the nation. Members of the recently elected Legislative Assembly, including Farooq Ahmad Shah, Sheikh Ahsan, Mushtaq Guru, and Rafiq Ahmad Naik, also attended the ceremony. After paying his respects, Abdullah visited a blood donation camp set up as part of the event and expressed his appreciation for the individuals donating blood. He commended their spirit of selflessness in contributing to the community’s welfare.

“As security forces and the administration respond with reinforced measures, the path forward requires not just military strength but also socio-political solutions that address the underlying causes of unrest. Only through collective resolve and a focus on long-term peacebuilding can Jammu and Kashmir move towards a more stable and secure future.”

Heightened Security Amid Intensifying Operations: The region continues to remain on high alert as security forces intensify their operations against militants. With back-to-back attacks and the lingering threat of cross-border militancy, the need for enhanced security measures has become more urgent than ever. The ongoing operations, along with the strong resolve demonstrated by the Jammu and Kashmir administration, underscore the Union Territory’s commitment to securing peace and stability for its citizens. As LG Sinha reiterated, “A terror-free Jammu Kashmir is our sacred pledge,” a sentiment echoed by the entire leadership.

Kashmir Horizon View: To address the escalating violence in Jammu and Kashmir, a multi-pronged approach is essential. First and foremost, security forces must intensify their efforts to dismantle militant networks and ensure robust intelligence gathering to prevent future attacks.  Collaborative coordination between the army, police, and central agencies should be prioritized, along with real-time intelligence sharing. Strengthening border surveillance and fortifying the Line of Control (LoC) will be critical in curbing cross-border infiltration. Furthermore, the administration should focus on de-radicalization programs and community engagement to win the trust of the local populace, reducing the appeal of militancy.  Efforts to bolster economic development, particularly by providing jobs and improving infrastructure in affected areas, are vital to alleviating long-standing grievances that militants exploit.  Lastly, diplomatic efforts with neighboring countries must be reinforced to address the root causes of cross-border militancy and ensure peace in the region.
