Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government appointed senior National Conference (NC) leader Nasir Aslam Wani as an advisor to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday. A close aide of Abdullah, Wani previously served as the Minister of State (MoS) during Abdullah’s first tenure from 2009 to 2014, overseeing multiple ministries.
An official order from the General Administration Department (GAD) confirmed, “Nasir Aslam Wani is hereby appointed as advisor to Chief Minister, J&K,” noting that the terms and conditions of his appointment will be communicated separately. Currently, Wani serves as the Provincial President of the National Conference for Kashmir and is the Constituency Incharge for Kupwara.
Born on August 31, 1964, Wani has made significant contributions to the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir and is the grandson of the late politician Ghulam Nabi Wani Sogami. He contested elections in 2008 from the Amirakadal Constituency. Wani has been actively involved in social work through various NGOs. He joined the Youth National Conference in 1998, where he was appointed Central Secretary. He later served as the Provincial Secretary of Kashmir Province and was a member of the Central Working Committee of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference. In the 2008 General Elections, Wani contested from the Amirakadal Constituency, securing 3,922 votes against 3,103 for his rival, Parvez Ahmad of the PDP. Following this victory, he was inducted into the Council of Ministers under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on July 11, 2009, as the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Public Health Engineering (PHE), Tourism, and Revenue & Relief.
