Srinagar : Two number of Six-Week duration training programmes on “Aquaculture Production Rates vs Best Health Management Practices” and “Fish Disease Diagnosis & Health Management in Cold Water Fisheries” were inaugurated by the Division of Aquatic Animal Health Management (AAHM), Faculty of Fisheries, SKUAST-K. The trainings are sponsored by the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME), Govt. of India. The inaugural sessions of the respective training programmes were conducted on 15th and 17th October 2024, at Panchayat Ghar, Rangil, and Panchayat Ghar, Shuhama, Ganderbal, respectively. A total of approximately 25 participants, from diverse backgrounds, have enrolled in each training programme.
The events commenced with a brief overview by Dr. Asifa Wali, Assistant Professor, Division of AAHM, and Programme Coordinator of both the training programmes. She talked on the importance of health management in the fisheries sector and emphasized the activities planned under the programmes. Dr. Wali also extended her gratitude to Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai, Honorable Vice-Chancellor of SKUAST-K, Prof. Haroon Naik, Director of Planning and Monitoring at SKUAST-K, Prof. Farooz Ahmad Bhat, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries, and Prof. Feroz A. Shah, Head of the Division of AAHM, for their support. Prof. Feroz A. Shah, HOD-Division of AAHM, and Guest of Honour, explained the significance of fish disease diagnosis and health management. He discussed the current scenario of fish healthcare in India and highlighted the Division of AAHM’s achievements in fish health management, particularly in coldwater fisheries. The Chief Guest, Prof. Farooz Ahmad Bhat, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries, lauded the efforts of the organizers and stressed on the importance of disease diagnosis and health management as crucial elements for sustainable cold-water fisheries. He highlighted the economic potential of prioritizing fish health management in cold-water aquaculture for the stakeholders. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Shariq Nazir Qadiri, Assistant Professor-Division of AAHM, FoFy, SKUAST-K.
