SKIMS Soura Conducts Successful Rare Cardiac Surgery, Director Lauds Team For Good Work

Srinagar: The Department of Cardio Vascular Thoracic Surgery SKIMS recently successfully operated a 60 year old patient with rare pathology and give a new lease of life to him.
Dr. Farooq Ganie, Associate Prof. CVTS SKIMS who headed the surgical team while giving details said that the patient, active smoker, boat rider by profession, with no underlying comorbidity complained of sudden onset chest pain and breathlessness. Patient was immediately rushed to one of the big corporate private hospital,
where ECG showed features suggestive of heart attack and ECHO was suggestive of ‘Acute (valvular leak) MR with AML Chordae torn with complete prolapse of AML with LCX and LAD hypokinetic. Patient was given aspirin and clopidogrel orally and was immediately referred to dept of cardiology SKIMS Soura where patient was thoroughly evaluated and was immediately discussed with cardio surgical team department of CVTS SKIMS and the patient was planned for emergency surgery. On admission the patient was found in Cardiogenic shock with hemodynamic unstable with pulmonary edema. Immediate resuscitation was started with ionotropic support and was shifted to operation theatre and surgery went uneventful. The patient was shifted to CVTS ICU and was put on mechanical ventilation with multiple ionotropic support. The patient was extubated after 6 hours of surgery. The patient is recovering and
will be discharged soon. Dr. Farooq added that patients who present with such pathology, acute mitral regurgitation secondary to infarction emergently requiring valve replacement have a 80-90% mortality in world’s best cardiac centeres. Director SKIMS Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie appreciated the Department of CVTS, SKIMS
Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care for performing the surgery successfully. He said SKIMS has one of the finest surgeons and other medical practitioners who are infusing new life to the SKIMS patientcare practices. He said SKIMS being the one of the leading Institute in the country is hugely contributing to the healthcare in the country and SKIMS will continue to grow and will always
take a lead in the health structure through efficient & robust patient care. The surgery team included Dr farooq Ahmad Ganie Associate professor Department of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Abid, Dr. Mudasir, Dr. Ajmal and the anesthesia team included was headed by Prof. Showkat Ahmad Gurcoo Head Department of Anesthesia, Dr. Shafat Associate Professor and Dr Irfan supported by perfusion team , scrub team Including Sabzar, Asifa , Shameem.
