“Instead of focusing on the true purpose of marriage and the values of love, compassion, and commitment, excessive spending weddings often lead to a display of wealth and social status, which is not in line with the teachings of Islam.”

Marriage is a sacred institution in Islam, and it is celebrated with joy and festivity. However, in recent times, there has been a growing trend of excessive and extravagant spending on weddings. This trend is concerning and goes against the principles of simplicity and moderation taught in Islam. In this article, we will explore the Islamic perspective on excessive spending on marriages and the harmful effects it can have on individuals and society at large. One of the fundamental teachings of Islam is the concept of moderation. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) emphasized the importance of leading a balanced life and avoiding extravagance. Excessive spending on weddings not only contradicts this teaching but can also lead to financial strain and debt for the families involved. Instead of focusing on the true purpose of marriage and the values of love, compassion, and commitment, excessive spending weddings often lead to a display of wealth and social status, which is not in line with the teachings of Islam. Furthermore, excessive spending on weddings can create social pressure and unrealistic expectations within communities. Families may feel compelled to match or outdo the lavishness of other weddings, leading to a cycle of excessive spending and one-upmanship. This creates an unhealthy environment where the focus shifts from the significance of the marital bond to the extravagance of the event. From an Islamic perspective, it is important to remember that the marriage contract itself is the most crucial aspect of the wedding.

“Excessive and extravagant spending on marriages go against the core values of Islam and can have detrimental effects on individuals and communities. It is essential for Muslims to adhere to the teachings of moderation and simplicity, especially when it comes to celebrating weddings. By focusing on the spiritual and emotional significance of marriage rather than material displays, individuals can uphold the true essence of Islamic teachings and contribute to a more harmonious and balanced society.”

The emphasis should be on the commitment made between the couple and their families, rather than on materialistic displays. Islam encourages simplicity and discourages wastefulness, regardless of one’s financial standing. Therefore, extravagant weddings that involve exorbitant spending on clothing, decorations, and entertainment contradict the essence of Islamic teachings. It is vital for the community and religious leaders to play a role in addressing this issue. Instead of encouraging and glorifying lavish weddings, they should promote the values of simplicity, humility, and modesty. By organizing workshops, seminars, and pre-marriage counseling sessions, the community can help raise awareness about the negative impacts of excessive spending on weddings and emphasize the importance of adhering to Islamic principles. In conclusion, excessive and extravagant spending on marriages go against the core values of Islam and can have detrimental effects on individuals and communities. It is essential for Muslims to adhere to the teachings of moderation and simplicity, especially when it comes to celebrating weddings. By focusing on the spiritual and emotional significance of marriage rather than material displays, individuals can uphold the true essence of Islamic teachings and contribute to a more harmonious and balanced society.
